UCLA Film Fall 2011 Decisions?

Has anyone been accepted/denied yet? I have heard they call you over the phone for the interview if you make it to the second round, can anyone confirm/deny this? Any info from people applying currently or who have been accepted/denied in the past is appreciated!

Nope, haven’t heard anything here. It’s kinda daunting being part of an applicant pool that eventually gets cut down to 15, right? I’m a current transfer student.

It’s very daunting. I am almost 99% sure I won’t get in but I got a fee waiver to apply so I figured, what the heck, it’s my dream school, I’ll still apply. Here’s to hoping we are part of the lucky 15!

Agreed! It’s definitely worth a shot. Anyone else out there?

I didn’t apply at all, but this thread definitely interests me. How good is UCLA’s film school? Is it regarded as prestigious and how hard is it to get in? Thanks for answering my questions.

Hey there.

So I applied and also have not heard back. However, I just spoke with a counselor who said everyone (those who will be interviewed and those who won’t) will hear back by mid-April. But, I can’t help but think if you haven’t gotten an interview notification yet, it’s a no-go. :(

@ gold3n
UCLA’s film school is considered the third in the nation behind only Tisch and USC.

UCLA’s school is smaller and more selective than the other two.

NYU’s Tisch is not considered as an effective means as the other schools to enter into the mainstream, Hollywood film industry.

Yeah, mid-April sounds about right. Then again, they did say that notification for interviews goes on until the end of March; and there are still 8 days left in March. Maybe they’re trying to be suspenseful and leave it to the last possible day :P

Also waiting to hear about the interview. I believe I found a post from last year where someone heard near the beginning of April…really, really hoping there’s still a chance I’ll get a call :/

I also am waiting to hear about an interview. I called them last week and they said no calls have gone out yet, but that was last week. From what I read on a last years forum, they give you about a weeks notice before the actual interview. So at the latest Im guessing they will call the first week in April or so…

Anyone care to post some stats on your application? Like GPA and what not?

I completed the IGETC and took a few film history classes and one production class as well as one beginning acting class. I know the major decisions will be made about the writing portions of the application. But im just curious to know what everyone else is lookin like.

This sucks. Does anyone know the highest level of matth required to be considered as a prospective film student?

What do you mean, panther13? Like, does the math class really count towards your application as a film student? In that case, no, not really. They say that all they really care about as far as classes go is major prep, if you even take major prep classes like film and tv history and such (they’re not required)

Hey LukeFrazier. I’ve got a 3.0 GPA (3.005 to be exact—It’s a long story) in all my transferrables (Straight-A 4.0 in anything that has something to do with Film and/or TV, though, so that’s good) and somewhereabout 70 transferrable semester units.

Got a letter of rec from my TV instructor

2 TV workshop/history classes
3 Film classes (Cinema, American Cinema, and Contemporary Cinema)
1 Theatre History class
3 other artsy classes like music and stuff.

17 year old (long story) transferring out of a norcal CCC with an IGETC.

Also applied to UCSC.

Anyone else care to share? :)

Yea panther13, I dont think a specific math class is required. I dont know if you are in California, but here if you satisfy the IGETC then you should be alright. I know i got up to Algebra II, but I really dont think the UCLA film program will pay much attention to that.

Zdfproductions, sounds good man! Im getting nervous since decisions are getting closer, its good to hear from other people. From everything that I have read from past years they pay close attention to the writing samples. It kinda sucks cause its hard to judge where you are in relation to other people. Most majors can look at GPA and classes taken to judge their chances at getting in, but i know that that is a very small part of getting into this film program.

Anyways, good luck to all! It would be cool to hear from others! =)

Oh! and I applied to USC also zdfproductions! You know anything about when acceptance decisions for that school goes out?

I didn’t go near USC. (I think you mis-read UCSC (Santa Cruz) for USC) :stuck_out_tongue: Cost was basically the issue.

Here is my youtube channel for all that are curious. Figured we might as well watch each others’ film projects while we wait anxiously :stuck_out_tongue: Criticism doesn’t hurt.

Here’s the best episode of a show I shoot and edit for my college’s cable access TV channel. Ignore the other episodes; they were really just us messing around. This one was legit, however.

Oh crap, my bad you are right! A little dyslexia never hurt anyone. =P

Nice videos though! The “Dysfunctional Clouds” episode was my favorite. Your editing was extremely smooth and the dialog was hilarious. I love the look of those DSLRs, I gotta get me one; the image is so clear.

If you want my twin bro and I have a couple of channels on youtube that you can check out. Here is our more serious channel…

and here is the channel were we just mess around and post comedy stuff…

I think what they really want is at least a 3.6-3.8 GPA…I only have a 3.11 so I don’t have a shot. I only applied because I got a fee waiver. It’s my dream school but they always admit very high GPA students to the film major and I just don’t have the numbers. My guidance counselor at my CCC used to read essays for UCLA and she tells everyone “for transfers, its not about points from extra curriculars or letters of rec. Just a simple numbers game. Complete IGETC and highest GPA wins.” There may be SOME leeway for film like if the portfolio was really really bad like lots of mispelled words etc. But for the most part it is definitely gonna be a numbers game. I’m definitely out of the race unless everyone else who applied miraculously has low GPAs this year.

What’s everyone’s backup school? I anticipate being accepted everywhere except UCLA, lol.

Yeah, Dysfunctional Clouds is definitely the one we put the most effort into. All the others were shot 48 hours before air pretty much :stuck_out_tongue: Yeah. I’m not the writer, I just like to shoot and edit.

@lexapower You can count on me to have a low GPA! Yeah, I notice they tend to admit higher GPA students, but i’m guessing that has more to do with UCLA undergrad admissions rather than TFT. Backup school is Santa Cruz. My backup for my backup is basically networking in the industry and just starting from the bottom, quite like most filmmakers actually. James Cameron made the top 1 and 2 grossing films of all time and wasn’t formally trained at all*

*results not typical :P
