I think because they are a part of UCLA they honor UCLA’s high academic standards and only generally admit students who have received A’s in the majority of their lower division courses. My screenwriting professor at CCC did her undergrad at UCLA and she flat out told me “they don’t like B’s at UCLA.” (In terms of admitting freshman or new transfer students)

Yea the average GPA admitted for the last three years has been from 3.6 and up. You can see last years here:

[Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2010 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof10_mjr.htm#TFT)

So contrary to popular belief I believe GPA is the main deciding factor of admission. After they weed out everyone with low GPA (except maybe one or two extraordinary cases) then and only then I believe they look at our portfolios. An amazing portfolio isn’t going to make someone with a 3.0 more competitive than someone with a 3.9 and a mediocre portfolio. UCLA is at the end of the day an academic institution, not a for profit film school, and their primary goal is academic integrity and standard, with their secondary goal being training us for our future career.

@zdfproductions - I was accepted to UCSC but I really don’t think I’ll be going there. I looked at their website and their list of equipment only includes one still camera and one web camera. I am sure they must have other cameras for production and I emailed them asking to contact me to explain to me what kind of equipment they have and no one got back to me. But the fact that the website is not updated really irks me and makes me kind of doubt the professionalism of that school.

@lexapower I really don’t feel like going to UCSC, but I applied just so I have an option. I friend told me that if I “actually want to learn anything, don’t go to UCSC” (besides their marine bio majors and stuff)

It’s interesting thing about this is that there are many people out there in the industry who say that you shouldn’t even go to film school. I at least wanted to apply, and then if I don’t get in, it just wasn’t meant to be. That would suck if TFT put more weight on the GPA that the actual character of the applicant. I’m hoping they don’t. :)

Agh! This waiting freaken sucks! Anyone got any news? Im thinking about calling in again soon to see if they have actually called yet…

Anyone seen this yet? [Anyone hear from UCLA TFT about interview yet? - Topic](http://www.studentfilms.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5486066451/m/3180012916)

Ouch. I guess that its then. =/ unless they arent done interviewing. i noticed all that were interviewed in the forum were from places very close to LA. I dont know if they are interviewing by region or what but yea…that sucks.

The only scenario in which they could still call us for an interview is if they were the “within UCLA” transfers. Otherwise, it looks as though UCLA has selected their 2.5% of their applicant pool. Eh. i’m not worried. I applied to give fate the chance to present itself but it’s looking like film school is not for me. UCLA is a no-go and Santa Cruz seems worse than I thought it is. And I don’t even know if I got into that! :P

Film school is best summarized by this article: [Is Film School Worth It in 2011? | NoFilmSchool](<a href=“Is Film School Worth It in 2011?”>Is Film School Worth It in 2011?)

Scroll down to the part with the picture of the LA film set and read that paragraph. This sentence is the gist of the article: “As Dov Siemens, Quentin Tarantino’s mentor, likes to point out: less than 1% of film school grads ever make a feature. Many film school grads scramble for entry level work and end up getting hired by people who never went to school.”

Oh. And they have massive debt.

Perhaps it’s a good thing i’m not going to TFT? only time will tell :)

It just sucks cause I had a 3.63 gpa and had what i thought was a well crafted application. I thought I has a shot but I guess it just wasnt meant to be.

Thanks for that post zdfproductions! Its given me a lot to think about, and now im not so sure i want to go to film school.

Anyways, good luck to all!

Exactly. What it looks like to me is that if you want to be a doctor or a lawyer, you have to go to college of course, but film is art. You can’t exactly teach that. Now, people arguing for film school will say that they have special connections with certain people in the industry. But if you just wanted to go to school to exploit those connections, who’s guaranteeing that they’ll give you a job in the industry once you’re out of school? And, why spend tens of thousands of dollars investing in an education that merely states that you know a lot about film. Without experience or knowing the right people, film school is a chunk of debt that’s gonna be hard to pay off. Especially on a filmmaker’s budget, right?

Yeah. Film school’s not my thing XP

Hey everyone, new to the forums here.

I just called UCLA TFT and I was essentially told “Interviews have been made, but there could be more if we don’t like who we have.”

I’m seriously stressing out. Someone I know was interviewed last week.
My GPA is 3.97 and I’ve taken film analysis, production, and screenwriting courses.
I thought I had a really good chance, but it seems like all hope is pretty much lost. :(

zdfproductions, I agree with you 100 percent! Its just film school is an easy start for a lot of people. Its prolly one of the easiest ways to get a foot in the door in the business, even though you pay for it in tuition. I mean for me its like if I dont go to film school then where do I start? I guess if I decide Im not going to film school I gotta want to become a filmmaker even more to achieve that goal. Im blabbering…but thats my two cents. You just gotta want it enough, not getting into film school didnt stop Spielberg or many other director from getting to where they are.

Lord Jim: I doubt they are going to not like what they have, especially when they have 15 extra interviewers to choose from. I feel like Im in the same boat as you though. I had a 3.63 GPA, took the classes they prescribed, and wrote what I thought was a well written application. Ill admit that I am super bummed about not being selected for an interview, but its not over, definitely dont say all hope is lost. Even if you dont get into UCLA or any film school, it doesnt mean its over. You just gotta want it enough, more than the guys that did get an interview.

I’m going to start looking for PA jobs this summer. Check this out: [The Anonymous Production Assistant’s Blog | A view of Hollywood from the bottom.](http://anonymousassistant.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/)

it’s super useful.

One of my classmates already had his interview and was accepted. If you didn’t get in you can always appeal but at the end of the day, there are those of us who deserved to go and didn’t deserve to go and if you didn’t deserve it then work hard at your GPA and apply again next year. if you deserved to go and still didn’t get in, *&^% UCLA and know in your heart that you are a good filmmaker and you don’t need any brand name school to succeed. CSUN, CSULB, UCSB and even UCSC are fine schools and any of them would be lucky to have you. Don’t let the losers at admissions bring you down. If you know you worked hard then you should be happy for yourself and sad for UCLA that they missed out. Just believe in yourself everyone and wherever you go try your best and learn all you can. Our time in college is too short to just be sad about UCLA. Just enjoy the experience and learn as much as you can wherever you go.

Lexapower, you said you got accepted into UCSC? I’ve checked and it looks like there hasn’t been a decision made for me yet. Maybe they’re staggering the notifications? Thoughts?

zdf - I believe all of the UCs have until April 30th to let us know one way or the other about admissions decisions. Did you create your Santa Cruz portal online? If they are missing any documents from you that are holding off your admissions decision, it should say on your portal. Let me know if you need help creating the portal and if necessary I can forward you the email I got from them about it (but you should have gotten this email as well). I myself am still waiting to hear from UCSD and I know they have until April 30th to let me know.

Yup, created the gold password and everything. But when I click on it it just says that they’ve received the application. Nothing else. hmph.

yes, but all the students on that page identify themselves as Freshmen. Is it possible they are applying to either Theatre or another program to enter UCLA as Freshmen? UCLA’s film production BA program is very strict about transferring with Junior Status (either having completed UCLA’s GE curriculum or IGETC through a socal community college.)

At the college fair at my community college on March 29th, 2011, the rep for UCLA School of TFT said that they “were only getting ready to start calling people soon.” Of course, she said that after I said no to her previous question, “Oh! Did they call you yet?!”

I read an online thread where a girl from 2007 got her call (for an interview) on April 12, which in 2007 was a Thursday. That would correlate with this coming Thursday, April 14, 2011. She said her interview was a “week from this Saturday,” which would correlate to Saturday, April 23, 2011 for us if they follow a similar schedule.

The contract with the community colleges in socal is that they let everyone know by the end of April - it makes sense that they would follow a similar interview schedule every year. Deliberations from 30 interviews would not take long to cut down to half…probably less than a day’s work for the staff. That girl found out she was accepted the wednesday after her interview, which in 2011 would be Wednesday, April 27, 2011.

I am a 4.0 student with 66 transferring semester units and I will complete IGETC after I finish the physical science course that I am currently in. So either, they didn’t feel my application should make it to the interview round for other reasons or they haven’t called yet. It’s also possible that my application got lost…I guess I’ll find out after the deadline for them to let us know.

@s30 I know for a fact UCLA already did all their film transfer interviews. I know two people who got in.

@zdf Can you call the UCSC admissions department and ask when a new batch of admissions decisions will be released?
