I’ve completed the IGETC from my community college. I’m transferring as an English major. This is written on assist.org:
-----------NOTE : Transfer students who have satisfied the UCLA College (Letters and
Science) foreign language requirement at the high school level through the IGETC
program may satisfy the departmental foreign language requirement with 5 foreign
literature in translation courses.------------
And below that where the required courses for transfer are listed, it says a 4th semester of one foreign language is required and the 5th quarter of the same language will have to be completed at UCLA.
I took Spanish as a freshman in high school and got a D the first semester and a B the second. Then I took two more years of Spanish in high school and received A’s both years. The IGETC requires 2 years of a foreign language at high school level, so that’s covered.
But my question is if I qualify for UCLA at all. I did not take any foreign language classes in college, and it says 5 quarters total are required for the major, so does that mean I will have to take an upper division Spanish class if I get in? I’m a little confused. Do I have to take Spanish before I transfer?
Side note: I was filling out my UC apps and there’s a page where it asks “Prior to transfer, will you complete one transferable college course in Mathematical concepts and qualitative reasoning?” I’m assuming this is a probability and statistics class. I actually skipped stats and took Algebra II instead, as it was an option on the IGETC. Will I still have to take stats to qualify for a transfer? It feels odd check the “no” box.
a. 5th quarter or 4th semester of college foreign language.
b. 3rd quarter or 2nd semester of college foreign language and two foreign literature courses (can be in translation).
c. IGETC foreign language satisfaction and five foreign literature courses (can be in translation).
You may want to ask UCLA directly if completing any of the options for the foreign language requirement is necessary before transfer.
Late to this post but I’m a current UCLA English major. I would highly suggest doing the 5 literature in translation courses. Much easier and much more variety. Also gives you the P/NP option if that’s something that interests you.
To answer your question:

NO! You don’t need to take any foreign language courses before you transfer. You would take 5 foreign language courses in translation (they can be lower division depending on your transfer credits) to fulfill the requirements as a transfer. Those classes change every year so make sure to look at the actual UCLA catalog NOT the English website.
Take the classes that interest you and they do NOT have to be related or in any type of sequence. So for example, fall quarter you could take Scandinavian Myths. Winter quarter it could be Classic Arabic texts and spring quarter it could be French Contemporary literature.
It sounds much more intimidating then it is.
Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out with any questions you might have! We would love to have you be a part of the English program!
