UCLA Freak Out: Fall '12 -Help!

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Just for a quick over view on my stats. This will be a pretty complicated post so thank you so much for reading!

GPA: 3.76
Major: Poli Sci
EC: Good (mock trial coach/volunteer)
PersStatement: Okay
42 Units CCC, 20 AP units (end of fall '11 semester)
IGETC: 2 course till completion which will be taken this Spring.

Here comes the issue, so far I've only fulfilled 2 of the pre-req for the major at UCLA due to extremely limited amount of courses actually even offered at my CCC. Also made a note of this limitation in my application. So I called into UCLA admissions the lady told me because of this I would not be considered very competitive. So I freaked out.

At the moment I'm taking a Poli Sci (Judicial Reasoning) course however it is not listed on Assist for UCLA or any other UC offered.

I am attempting to get into a Poli Sci: Comparative course. Which will put me at 2 pre-reqs.

Do I still have a chance at UCLA?
I've applied for all UCs (except UCR & UCM) and TAG to UCSD

At this point im confused on whether I should drop the Poli Sci course that isnt listed on Assist or if I should keep it just to show that I attempted to take courses to fill my pre-req?
Currently 12 units, (will be 15 with the last course) does a full course load make a difference on admissions chances?

I'm really freaking out because I thought I was competitive for UCLA and now this last semester just might be hell!

CliffsNotes:
Do I have a chance into UCLA (or any UC for that matter?)
Should I drop my Poli Sci 13 class, that doesn't fulfill any major req?
Does a full course load increase admissions chances?

Thanks for your time!

Honestly to tell you, the UCLA Admissions you’ve called have better credibility than what we can offer you.

So, if UCLA is your dream school and you don’t get in are you going to SD? Or wait another year to finish your pre-req and re-apply to LA?

OP, UCLA can’t dock you if your CC doesn’t offer the prerequisites. Do they not actually offer them, or have you simply not been in the proper position to take them?

I went back to last year’s UC admitted thread and some guy got rejected and didn’t know why because he had good stats. He called and the reason was because he was missing a pre req. When he explained that it was not offered at his CC they told him he should have been enrolled concurrently at another CC that did offer the course.

There was a debate going back and forth about if it was explicitly stated that this was the procedure. Apparently it had been an unofficial policy to not hold it against the applicant if their CC did not offer all the pre reqs. In recent years it’s been getting more competitive though which is why they may be less lenient about this.

These are only vague details, sorry. I don’t know if this helps.

@ OP
UCLA is known for taking GPA and pre-req completion very seriously. Pre-political science is one of those majors that don’t require many pre-requisites for admittance so to be missing any would really look bad. Does your community college have an agreement with UCLA?

@Bricies
Can you tell me where you got that info from? I would think that the applicant would take it upon him/herself to find those important pre-req courses at other community colleges.

@AllFields & Karma

I suppose I should have been more specific. You will get reamed if a CC in your area does offer the class; but specifically, for my major, Philosophy, only a small handful of CCs offer Berkeley’s prerequisites, and since none of the CCs in my area do offer them, I won’t be at fault for not completing them. (In fact, despite completing six philosophy courses during my time at CC, I will not have completed any of Cal’s three Phil prereqs!)

@lawlking: If I dont get into UCLA, I will in fact go to UCSD. UCLA isnt necesarrily a “dream school” but rather one I enjoy and is nearest to me.

@karmago my CCC isnt a “TAP” school if that is what you mean

@Briceies: Okay to throw in some more clarity here, I went to two different CCCs just to finish off IGETC in the past 2 years. The most current one I attend does have two more classes however, it is impossible schedule wise to take one of those (IGETC class is same time). In your situation as well does it help to taken classes in my major that dont really fulfill the prereqs?

If not UCLA, is there even a chance in hell of me getting anywhere else (aside from TAG)?

EDIT: At this time I am attempting to email the one other teacher in the area who teaches the course(might have to move the IGETC course). Would it be worth it to come into a class 3 weeks late just to fulfill the pre-req? Or should I just stick with the 2?

By agreement, what I mean is a course agreement. Your community college may or may not have a list of courses that can be taken there that would satisfy UCLA’s pre-requisites.

UCLA’s pre-political science pre-requisites require 4 of the following courses from political science: Introduction to political theory, International relations/world politics, Introduction to American government/politics, Introduction to comparative politics, Politics and strategy. A statistics course under mathematics is also required. For my college, the course agreement only required me to take 3 poli-sci courses and the math.

If your school does not have a specific course-equivalent agreement with UCLA, then I would think the pre-requisites, or lack of, would be detrimental to your admissions process. Check with your college and UCLA repeatedly. If all else fails, just complete as many of those pre-reqs as you can as UCLA factors them very heavily.

I see, mine as well say 3 must be specified… Thing is it also states “this class must be taken at UCLA” for the statistics course. Which I did take at my CCC.

Thanks a bunch for some clarity guys, back to the PoliSci 13 course, should I just drop this as it is not a prereq for any of the UCs? While it gives UC cred, I dont see the point of taking the class if I have enough cred as it is…

Huh. That’s odd considering that stats would be generic enough to take anywhere…you might want to look again just in case.

As for your other poli-sci course, take it if you have less than 70 credits since only 70 will be carried through. If not, then you can drop it if you’d like.

So do all UCs weigh this heavily on pre-reqs?
What chances do I have say at Berk or other UCs?

^^Yes, pre-reqs mean the faster you move to graduation. If you don’t complete pre-reqs then that means you will stay at that school longer than before. Berkeley has a strict 4-semester (excluding summer) policy, meaning after 4-semesters(Depending on your major also) if you do not qualify for a bachelor they will drop you. This is done so that new students can be given a chance to attend. The longer you stay, then the new students have to be denied admittance.

You will be fineee. Whatever u do, don’t freak out! Your future is not gonna be worse of you don’t get accepted.

Honestly this Pre req nonsense with my CCC is really what is making me worry. Anybody with my chances at Cal or anything else?

Did you complete the stats course? Is it articulated?

Did you complete the 4 other pre-reqs? You might get by with missing 1, but that’s it…missing 2 is a reject.

Also, did you complete both english courses and math for IGETC by fall?

Let me be more clear. I have taken a stats course however according to assist. None of the stats at both CC transfer. I will have taken only 2 poli sci courses that transfer after spring. Is this auto reject from all UCs??

Edit: I’ll have finished IGETC by Spring as well
(my Most recent CC only offers 3 poli sci courses)…

You’re like in a gray area. Many are missing the poli sci stats course. It’s good you’ve already taken regular stats for IGETC. It’s also good to complete both english courses by fall.

In regards to the other 4 poli sci pre-reqs, I really think you should finish all by spring…might get away with missing 1 at the most. Also they like to see at least half done by fall so they can get an idea of your major GPA. All of these details are taken into consideration because the competition is high.

I’ve found that most admitted transfers completed all pre-reqs and those that were missing a pre-req had high GPA’s and/or TAP.

People will say that if your CC doesn’t offer a pre-req you won’t be penalized…but that’s not completely true @ UCLA.

Example:
Applicant 1) 3.75 GPA, 4 pre-reqs completed, CC doesn’t offer one.
Applicant 2) 3.75 GPA, 4 pre-reqs completed, went to another CC 10 miles away to complete 5th pre-req.

Guess that? Applicant #2 is admitted, and unfortunately applicant #1 is rejected.

@smcguy: Yea at this point it seems I’m pretty much out of UCLA because it literally impossible to take the other poli sci class ( I already go to two CC 40miles away from each other…). It also seems my 3 in ap lit/Lang won’t count at Berkeley so I’m out on that. Spring semester is already 3 weeks in. Just going to roll the dice on the rest of them. Hopefully my UCSD tag goes through fine…

I’m not sure which Poli sci courses you’re mising, but SMC offers 3 of 4 online that begin in Feb. [SMC Schedule of Classes Spring 2012](http://www2.smc.edu/schedules/2012/spring/)

You can also change your major to something like Anthropology, Philosophy and minor in Poli Sci. http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/applicant/changes.htm</a></p>

Just trying to help keep your hope alive.

@SMCGuy, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had no clue I hadn’t hit the deadline for major change yet! I have sent my request to change to Philosophy (have all the reqs).

Hopefully that pulls through; also are you suggesting that I take the online course at a completely different college? I actually have never thought of that didn’t know it was possible!
