I have heard from multiple people that UCLA's quality is going down and being overtaken by UCSD. Any truth to this rumor?

in my opinion SD is a ttt, with no reputation

however, it does have a very strong engineering program - it just sucks everywhere else

Who are the people you are hearing this from? UCSD students?

Heard it from folks at my school, and from Cal students when I was there.

specialK, what's a ttt?

I think UCSD is getting more applicants each year because people are starting to think UCLA is too hard to get into and settling for UCSD. But seeing this year, UCLA isn't that hard to get into as many people think.

i dont think UCLA's quality is going down, i just think UCSD's quality is going UP.

nevertheless, i don't see UCSD overtaking UCLA in the next few years, but hey, it could be possible. My argument is that if UCSD lands a huge chunk of the stem-cell research funding (San Diego is a good place for that-- has space and lots of biotech companies), then it will attract top faculty and many top students in the sciences/pre-med.

there's always talk about one school taking over the other. UCLA over berkeley? USC over UCLA? UCSD over UCLA? UCSB over UCSD?

i believe ttt = third tier trash

or third tier toilet =)

UCSD is a good school on the verge of becoming an excellent school on the national stage.

Some of the programs and departments at UCSD will CERTAINLY outbest the same programs and departments at UCLA, but in more likely scenario, UCLA will continue to carry stronger academic reputation as a whole.

Tradition is hard to change or undo.

Yeah, UCLA isn't going down, UCSD is just starting to get the recognition that it deserves. In certain areas, it's been the best or tied for the best for a while now (Bioinformatics, graduate theater, etc).

It's likely that UCSD will go up in the rankings because of its emphasis on teaching/research in biotechnology, but I don't think it can ever surpass UCLA in rankings or reputation unless it first becomes a well-rounded institution. Making it into the Pac-10 conference wouldn't hurt, either... Besides, UCLA's just been getting into the stem cell research area, making it harder for UCSD to distinguish itself in the long run.

Granted, UCSD is extremely underrated outside of California, however UCSD's best programs are in the biological sciences... you never hear of anyone boasting about UCSD Humanities. Conversely, UCLA has departments in the top 10 spread throughout the entire school. Even if UCSD learns to bring its other departments up to the same prestige level as its sciences and its students reach the caliber of those at UCLA, UCLA will still be more prestigious as it has many programs that are nonexistent at UCSD, and a national reputation.

It is doubtful UCSD will ever be perceived as more prestigious than UCLA; except by UCSD students.

"Making it into the Pac-10 conference wouldn't hurt, either..."

HAHA. unfortunately UCLA still destroys UCSD in the few athletics programs that they have. too bad for UCSD that UC Davis is the next division 1 UC school. maybe UCSD should join SDSU's conference for starters. that'd start up some rivalry. ;)

At UCLA you may be just a number, but it's Number One when compared to UCSD.

I'll give it ten years till UCSD matches/passes up UCLA as they recently received a HUGE grant from the state in bio research which formerly belonged to the UCLA department. And you also have to remember that no financing goes into sports at UCSD; hence, their academics are rising at a great pace. UCSD really isn't getting the respsect it deserves except mainly those from Califonia. If you really think UCSD is a weak school, you should actually look into the statistics before judging.

it is, you troll

UCLA is a good school and it will rise still. It's not rising very fast or anything, just like Cal is pretty much not rising as fast as it once was. UCSD is just rising very fast because look at where its located. It's next to over 500 biotech companies, and with the semiconductor revolution, and the biotech revolution coming in, UCSD will definitely get a boost.

UCLA's engineering school received like 40 million in 2003 I think, whereas UCSD's engineering school received 110 million--far more than Cal ever got too.

I think before you start using name and reputation, look at the school's quality. Especially for the two engineering schools. UCSD is almost level with UCLA--and definitely better when its BioE.

Btw, I still think UCLA is overhyped.

i happened to see this in the new posts and though i'd give a unique perspective.

i go to USC, the one place where negative rumors about UCLA would probably circulate most (whether it is admittedly true or not), and i have heard nothing about its quality dropping.

From another USCer's perspective, though we despise UCLA, we still respect it. UCSD? Not quite at the UCLA/USC level yet.

"UCLA's engineering school received like 40 million in 2003 I think, whereas UCSD's engineering school received 110 million--far more than Cal ever got too."

So? UCLA still has a much, much larger endowment - something which is growing at a much faster pace than UCSD's. Again, UCSD students simply are not on par with UCLA students. Assuming this comes true, UCSD still has little recognition outisde of California except in the biological sciences. Yes, underrated but trying to compare it with UCLA? Come on.

Thank you, spincut.

qwerasdf:

Btw, you're still a troll.
