Hi, everybody. I am a community college student whose looking to transfer to UCLA this coming fall. I’m very interested in trying new things such as joining a fraternity. I would like to know more about it as I have a few questions to ask:
- What are the best frats to join, reputation wise? (Partying, academics, etc.)
- Is it another option of dorming?
- What is rush week like?
@8CLAP4SUP UCLA has a huge Greek life community with about 15% of the student population currently in Greek life. I assume you’re talking about joining a normal social fraternity which is under the Interfraternity Council. Cultural and professional chapters are very different from social ones.
- I’d avoid reputations and stereotypes and instead join a house you fit in best. You’d be pretty unhappy trying to be someone you aren’t to join a house and then having to be with them all the time. Rush at UCLA is competitive so just because you wanna join a certain house doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily get a bid. There’s 20 different active chapters so there’s plenty to choose from.
- You’ll have to find housing for at least your first quarter. Some houses let you live in midway through the year. Either way you need to be an initiated brother to live in.
- Rush week is 6 days and involves an orientation, tour of fraternity row, and 5 days of going to houses and talking with the brothers of each house. Bids are allowed to be given midway through the end of rush week. Rush is dry and all houses are on official blackout so no parties during this time. Sororities are also doing rush and they have strict rules on no partying as well during rush. This is all during zero week fall quarter. There’s a smaller rush winter. Houses that don’t get enough guys from winter and fall will hold spring rush too. So only the smallest houses will have spring rush.
Hope this helps and feel free to ask me more questions about it. Going Greek is my favorite part of being at UCLA.
@10s4life Thank you so much! I will definitely ask more questions if I need to.
