UCLA, Gtech, Purdue, UIUC, UM

I have been admitted to UCLA, Gtech, Purdue, UIUC and got wait listed at UM.
I am planning on doing mechanical engineering.
I am indecisive at the moment because of there are pros and cons of each school.
So far, I have eliminated Purdue out of my choice and now I am left with 4.
It would be greatly appreciated if you guys can help me find the best university for me.
Thanks.

If you want to do Mechanical Engineering, go to whichever school is your state school, as all of them are great.

If UM is your state school, then you might want to stay on the waitlist. Otherwise, just go to another school (and save time/money/anxiety).

Advantages of UCLA:

– Very good school reputation
– Good medical school resourses/biomedical programs
– Better selectivity/student quality

Disadvatages:

– Cost if OOS (UC education isn’t really worth it OOS)
– Lesser known engineering program

For UM

– Very good school reputation and engineering program faculty/resourses
– Better selectivity/student quality
– College town experience

Disadvatages:

– Cost if OOS (highest of OOS tuitions in the nation)

For Gtech or UIUC:

Advantages:

– Lower OOS tuition costs
– Excellent engineering program with top-notch reputation in engineering circles (slightly better known than evan UofM)

Disadvantages:

– Lesser known for other programs

Purdue is basically a slightly lesser version of UIUC and GaTech in these aspects.

Look at the location, what you want to do/the quality of the MechE department and most importantly, the COSTS before making your decision.

I am an international student so I’ll have to pay OOS for all the school :(

I had similar thought about UCLA.
I was quite surprised about getting accepted at UCLA because 55,000 students applied and I thought I couldn’t make it.
And I thought it’d be a waste not going there because although it might be less strong in terms of engineering but it possesses a high reputation.

At this stage I recommend UIUC or Gtech. They are the two best engineering schools that you got accepted into. I also believe that UIUC has the largest international population of any school in the entire country. You will be sure to be in good company.
