is this really true? can they really be better than berkeley students?

If by better you mean having slightly higher stats than yes, they are. This is outside of the topic, but am I misreading something or does UCSD have a horrible yield?

Oh wow, how many times must I post that the schools tend to look for different things in the application? Nope, not doing it again.

Another key concept- "projected."

You're right. Berkeley students are morons. Why did I choose Berkeley instead of UCLA? I know; I'm an idiot, which is self-evident because I'm at Cal.
P.S.
I'm tired of trolls.

GandS,

I looked, and it didn't seem THAT bad. But it might be because UCSD has to a certain extent entered the "Cal and UCLA" tier and is competing for the same students. Or maybe people just can't handle 24/7 365 days a year beautiful weather and decide not to be spoiled.

NeedAdvice....i would really like to know the reasons why CAL is filled with morons.......I myself am a CAL student....so I would like to know how I am a moron??? Do explain....

It's sarcasm.

Cal's not filled with morons, but you sure can't spot some pretty obvious sarcasm, dweeb.

Can anyone point me to reliable admissions statistics for out-of-staters?
Thanks.

why would anyone put credence into a local high school's forecast? It's a nice idea, but where is the statistical validity?

burnt: not sure any campus breaks out stats by OOS, but Cal admisson rate for OOS is 21%. Just assume that the stats are significantly higher than the averages posted. Quite frankly, at $40k/yr for OOS, not sure it's worth it in comparison to a private school.

I can't find exact figures, but here's what I can find.

Anyway, I think 40k is a very high estimate, and that 30-35 might be more accurate. Especially if students live off campus in cheap apartments and what not, but maybe my estimates are off.

Drab:

actually, Cal is the highest, due to the cost of the units; most OOS kids will almost have to live in the dorms first year until they can aclimate to the town. Living on campus = $23,232 for in-state....add $17,820 for OOS = $40k. At that price....hmmmmm

Thanks. But is there anyone out there who thinks that there are ever good reasons for wanting to attend Berkely or UCLA despite the price tag?

There are places to live besides the units. So, perhaps for a few years some students will pay 40k. Guess what? Most aren't going to pay that all four years. Also, many private schools sticker price are going to end up costing 45-50k. There are many factors, but I think you're positing an overly high stirkcer price. Some poster wrote on a thread that 40k was not what he paid for his kid here. I can't find it.

Nope. there's no good reason to go to Cal or UCLA. Public schools in general, for that matter.

Drab:

I don't disagree that the Units are like dungeons, and are outrageously priced. But, you'll note that the budget put together by Cal's (FinAid?) office has a very low number for transportation, and essentially ignores the costs to fly to and from home, such as across country. Thus, the budget is likely low, IMO. Heck, its $26k just in fees alone...no books, no food, no shelter.

Um, I'm sorry. Where did I say the units are like dungeons? I didn't. They aren't. You ever seen the mini-suites? I live in them. They're quite nice. But the number is merely a projection. Outrageously priced? When did I say that? Compared to what? More than other college's dorms?

My roommate doesn't really fly home- my dad noticed that, when he went to college, the guy from far-away state X didn't really go home that often, only a few times a year. This changes based on the person. It's a rough projection, just like any other schools. Books? One could check just about every one out from the library, or one could buy each one new. Food is included with the housing on campus, although I'm not sure if it's factored in in the off campus proection. Books and expenses are included in the projection on the website. Personal expenses varies greatly- mine would be way above the average student, but I can do that. I do think that it's 26k, I'm not questioning, what website did you get it from? 17,820. plus what is the cost?

It's a great education in a great location. What else do you need?

Drab:

calm down son.... the website was Cal's -- it's their budget for cost of attendance. sheesh

I'm calm, blue.

Well you do have to keep in mind that high school students perceive Berkeley as a university filled with incredibly smart people, and many fear to even apply (my friend was one).
