UCLA Holistic Admissions

its fair enough to harp on ucla, but why ignore the other UCs? UCSD has even less blacks.

hmm..good point namaste..never thought about the other UCs..

You gotta take into consideration the number of black people that want to apply to each UC, i guess...idk :P

lasko: how will it help the people who dont have a chance?

I dont know, I don't completely understand. :P

""Holistic" admissions (the latest in a long series of pro-AA buzzwords) introduces enough confusion into the admissions process that it buys more time for these universities to keep their race-based admissions active -at least up until the next round of litigation

here's how it may help people who don't have a chance. Lets say you are really poor and/or a URM. because of issues you have, your gpa/sat scores are not nearly as important as making money for you family and you can't afford tutoring/sat classes so you don't have a particularly high gpa. UCLA wasn't really caring about this situation in the past, but now its supposedly going to be a big deal. You may be asking, what about those people who aren't poor but still have jobs and don't take tutoring? Well, you are the ones who are really at a disadvantage.

This also becomes an excuse for URMs to use during the application process to hide their low stats which may not have anything to do with their life issues. Similarly, it will lead to a lot of people claiming life issues when there were no issues present (aka lying). That's why im against this. I think that if you're poor or if you just messed up in high school, CC is a better route for your first two years and then transfer to UCLA. It will be cheaper for you and you'll be close to home to deal with issues you may have.

yeah...i'm interested to see what'll happen with this new system..

I hope this new system will get me accepted into UCLA in a couple of years.

i heard last years admission was really random..well at my school it was...i hope it really is random..and i'm part of it =]

i hope it's not literally random...that's not a good way to run things especially admissions to top league schools...If all schools were literally random, I would apply to hardvard. :P

Just FYI the process for transfer students was already holistic. This new decision is for freshman admissions.

oh...didn't know that...

I would say something, but... it might be controversial.

flopsy you got me on pins and needles now!!!

no touching of any stuff...

What if your an Asian/White but poor, had to work for 2 years to get money for yourself, first generation college student, single parent, no tutor, low gpa/SAT Scores etc.. will they even look into that? or just because your Asian/White you won't have a chance as the Blacks/Hispanics?
