UCLA HONORS PROGRAM?? Tell me About it

Ok so unfortunately I have the OPTION of doing the Honors Program at UCLA...
(I have discovered in life that multiple options suck...i hate picking....)

SO, my main question is what are the benefits besides priority for picking classes, a little extra recognition at graduation, and a little bruin pride?

Also, are the requirements to be in this program hard or demanding?
What else do i need to do on top of what a "normal" student has to do?

of course i can check it out on the site but i have you guys!!
thanks ppl.

Students in the honor program no longer get priority enrollment.

ok i dont even care about that anyways.

what do i need to do to stay in this program. any extra classes or what?
thanksppl

^
Thats funny, because it used to be basically why everyone did it.

bobslove there are a lot of topics on this, do a search.
But yes there are certain honors classes you have to take to be in the program (which adds a bit more work than a non-honors student) and you have to maintain a certain GPA (i think it’s 3.5 off the top of my head)

I don’t think the benefits are concrete anymore, such as priority enrollment…the benefits of the honors program are kinda whatever you make of it. You can use the small honors classes to get close to a professor or whatever… And I suppose it looks good on your diploma/transcript

Has anyone heard if they were accepted into the Honors Program?

my.ucla still has my pending thing and the date I sent it in…

also, do you simply “qualify” rather than have an application and such?

^uhmm we are supposed to hear back on may 31st about decisions, the application deadline was a while ago. i am an incoming freshman and i just figured i want to get a good gpa in college anyway so why not get recognized for it?

I applied for a scholarship that requires that I be in the Honors Program. I find out about that by June 1st I think.

Are there any disadvantages of NOT being in the honors program? I felt overworked in high school with APs and IBs, so I figured I’d take it easy in college.

From what I’ve heard the honors program is a little extra hassle that gives you a little seal on your diploma (or something menial like it). But, honors would look good when applying for grad school.

I think departmental honors is more important.

how do apply for deparmental honors? also, is honors nonbinding? as in you can get out of the program but not necessarily due to not qualifying?

^^^ departmental honors is only available to Juniors and seniors, and allows them to begin work on graduate studies. You are more or less nominated by applying (kinda ■■■■■■■■). They say that you must be “nominated”, but upon further research on the dps page, it says that you must fill out a form, you must get letters of recommendation, you must get your transcript, etc…

and I think you can get out of honors, well, even if you can’t, you just don’t have to fulfill the requirements and then you won’t get the extra “honor” (whatever that is - expected shinier seal on diploma!)

^thanks, i think we find out the 31st, meh, it may be worth the effort, i have issues with opportunities, ive passed many up so im kind of OCD about stuff like this…

How about if I’m not part of the honors program, but manage to pull off a high GPA? Would that look good for grad school too?

It would look better than a lower GPA…
