UCLA Honors vs. Berkeley Regents (premed)

Hey all,

I'm a student who's been put into the uncomfortable position of having to choose between UCLA and Berkeley. Could I get some thoughts on what premed is like at UCLA (atmosphere, GPA issues, counseling?, etc.) vs @ Berkeley? Thanks!

I'll be crossposting this on the Berkeley forum to get a wider variety of responses.

Go Berkeley regents. UCLA honors is nothing.

i have the same problem. la honors, cal regents, premed. ahh tough decision

What about LA Regents and Cal nothing?

Follow regents.

honors shouldnt make or break your decision

honors definitely does not give you what regents does. honors is wonderful for those students who didn't get regents, but if you DID, take it!!!
-free (or greatly reduced) tuition
-regent's scholar society (i'm assuming there's something like this at cal)
-plus many other perks...

unless you have some inherent bias against cal, and you feel you'd be absolutely miserable there, stick with regents. i turned down davis regents for LA, but if i'd got cal regents... that would have swayed me more.

i suggest forgetting the fact that you have regents, and visiting both campuses to see which you like better. if you like cal better, sold. if you like LA better, you've got to decide how MUCH you like it better to turn down cal regents. figure out what precisely the perks of cal regents are, and see if you could thrive at LA and be happy without them.

liyana's third paragraph is spot-on. Several of my close friends and I were making this exact same decision and it really just came down to where YOU think you will fit in better (because no offense to berkeley regents but $1000/yr--assuming you do not have financial need, if you do obviously this greatly changes the situtation--is nothing compared to what the other campuses give--granted I can't speak for how helpful the RCSA at berkeley is, so you should definitely speak to those in it already; I recommend doing the regent's overnight program before cal day).

wait, regents is 1k a year? really?
dang, no offense but that is ****... what are they thinking???

Yeah, when I applied (waaay back in 2007) regents was only 1000/yr if you don't have financial need..if you do then I think they cover loans with grants or something like that.

Premed before college even starts huh? Sounds familiar ;)

Regents is AT LEAST 1k per year, then ranges to full tuition (at least I'm pretty sure) if you qualify financially.

Follow the Regents.

Yeah, Berkeley Regents perks possibly aren't as good as others. What applies to me:

-1k a year
-guaranteed 4 year housing
-faculty adviser
-NO priority registration
-They do have a RCS association, dunno how helpful it is

But I've heard LA is a MUCH more premed friendly environment. How true is this, and is it enough to overcome non-Regents status?

no . . . friendly? i wouldnt say so since we have so many pre-meds here. it's a pre-med factory. everyone you meet here is pre-med - even the philosophy majors.

really. berkeley regents - why give it up? :( it essentially means you were at the the top of the applicant pool and by extension, one of the top incoming berkeley matriculants. if you prefer the LA environment over berkeley then i can see your call for LA. . . i think that is more reasonable than putting your eggs in the presumably friendly pre-med basket . . .

if regents gives you anything, then take it...here in LA, for example, you automatically get a parking spot, on top of priority enrollment for classes and housing.

i believe you get the opportunity for a parking spot- don't you still have to pay for it yourself? which is a pretty hefty expense... but hey, it's parking.

We are in the same boat having to decide between Cal/regents vs UCLA/regents... Bilogical sciences major.
It is going to be a tough decision for my D.

Clarification: I didn't get UCLA Regents.

Regents for sure. You get major $$$ and perks with regents.

I'm not sure about Cal's honors, but for LA anyone can become honors by getting the GPA requirement and taking the honors classes. It is nothing THAT special that should make you decide on going to that school. Except maybe for UCI, they're honors program is legit, or so I hear.

Flip a coin.

UCLA has the medical center on campus; dunno about Berkeley...?
