UCLA housing "cutting edge energy usage experiment"

Housing emailed me about this energy usage experiment, I was wondering if anyone else got the email/ has this been done in past years. What do you guys think?

Dear XXXXXXX
You have been randomly selected to participate in exciting new research on energy efficiency! Help us learn about how to encourage energy conservation by volunteering to live in a regular residence hall room outfitted with cutting-edge electricity monitoring equipment, which has been developed right here at UCLA. These electricity monitors are currently being installed in a number of residence hall rooms throughout UCLA, but we need the help of student volunteers who will live in these rooms and allow us to remotely collect data about their electricity usage. These devices are small and will not impact the space or configuration of your room. Don't miss this chance to help our research and learn about your own energy usage behavior! Moreover all volunteers for the study and survey participants stand the chance to win a $100 ASUCLA voucher.
Participants in the study will either receive real-time access to their electricity usage data or a report about how much electricity they use at the end of spring quarter. Some information on your energy use might be shared within your residence hall building community. For more information about the study, please click here to view the General Information Sheet.
This study is an important part of reducing green house gas emissions and airborne pollutants at UCLA and across California and the United States. Participation is strictly voluntary, and will not affect any housing related outcome.
If you would like to participate in the study and have read and understood the attached General Information Sheet, please click on the link below:
I would like to volunteer for the residence hall electricity experiment
If you are not willing to participate in the study, we would appreciate it if you filled out a brief survey by clicking on the link below. This will take less than 5 minutes of your time.
I would like to complete the survey only

This is the first time I’ve heard of this. It sounds very exciting. You should do it.

Heck I wish I get this email too. But do you get your own room or you share with your room mate?

i got this email as well.

i don’t mind participating, but then again, i probably won’t. haha.

i’m assigned to a plaza (single), but the letter keeps mentioning ‘residence hall rooms’
does that mean if i volunteer, i’ll be assigned a new room?! i’ll lose my single room and they’ll put me in a halll?

Got this too…

iamsonervous: I’m wondering that same thing.

Got this too.

Declined.

yeah i have a double, shared bath will this change my stuff?

I got it too. I traced the IP address from the email and narrowed it down to a single location. Turns out it was sent by Russian communists.

No thanks.

In regards to the changing room, your housing will not be affected whether you have been assigned to plaza or hall. The information does say hall, but I have contacted the director and he stated that your housing preferences will not change. all they are doing is adding a electricity monitor that’s it.

this is what i asked:
I have a question, if the study is done in a residential hall does this include residential plazas as well? I was assigned to live in a residential plaza, but if I sign up for this experiment does this mean that I have to move into a residence hall? I do not want to live in a residence hall at the moment.

response:
I apologize the wording was not clear.

You will not be moved out of your assigned building. If you participate it will not change where you live.

Best,

Robert
