UCLA: Housing, Food, Gyms & Transportation/Parking

Hi guys, like many of you I've been accepted to UCLA and am supremely excited.

Now that we've been accepted an array of questions have poured into my mind.

Beginning with transcripts:

Transcripts: It is my belief that we need to submit the SIR within June 1st and that UCLA admissions must receive official transcripts from (all) community colleges attended, correct?

Housing: Housing itself, the application form is due June 1st. My concern and question here is, if submitting that housing application earlier rather than later better ensures a spot for housing? Such as, a person submitting their housing application on May 5th will have a much better shot at housing than a person submitting their housing form on May 28th. Also, as a transfer from a CCC, I believe i'm guaranteed a spot for housing, no?

Food: Am I correct to suppose that a food plan is most likely included with our housing, should we choose to do so? I'm wondering if it would be better to go the food-plan route, eating exclusively at UCLA or simply shopping at the grocery store every few days? Food of course is directly proportionate with health which leads me to...

Gym: I visited UCLA once many years ago and by the big Bruin Bear I remember seeing a nice gym, with a rock climbing wall and all. I'm wondering indeed just how many gyms UCLA has and if any are open 24 hours (Am also wondering about UCLA's libraries hours of operation). I can only assume free membership is included for all UCLA students...

Transportation & Parking: I'm coming from Cerritos College and am planning to move to UCLA, taking my car with me. I'm now concerned whether parking is gonna be a b*tch, or if i'll even want to take my car to class with me at all. I'm already presuming i'll most likely need to get a bicycle to get to & from class, but have my car with me nearby in case I wanna drive on the weekends. This "transportation/parking" situation is purposely vague to me, in the hopes others in this community can shed some light on the matter.

I'm all ears and thanks for listening!

Holidays

All of your transcripts through Fall '10 need to be sent by June first as well as your SIR. After you get Spring grades, if you have them, send those by July 15. There is a date for transcripts from Summer too, but I can’t remember. Make sure you send all transcripts from any school you attended.

As for housing, I believe us transfers have a housing guarantee, the form has to be done by June 1st as well. Since it’s a guarantee, I don’t think it matters when it’s sent (May 1st as opposed to May 19). I am pretty sure most transfers that get the guarantee go into the triples so it’s all the same. There is a fee with the app though that has to be paid or else it obviously doesn’t get reviewed.

I think the food thing just depends on your preference and self control, haha. I’m sure there are healthier options in the dining halls, but of course there are the crappy ones too. If you think that you’re more likely to want to cook for yourself or eat off campus do a low meal plan so you still have the option. I read on the boards here that someone had a whole bunch of left over swipes on their card for meals, and the dining hall gave them boxes of water/gaterade etc. so you might be able to still benefit if you don’t use them all, but of course thats up in the air.
Also there are a lot of places to eat in LA, healthy places as well. Take that into account.

I think the gym membership is free for students, and extra for specialized classes etc.
If you go here you can view all the gym facitilies [Welcome to UCLA Recreation](http://www.recreation.ucla.edu). There are hours as well.
For the libraries, the hours vary. http://www.library.ucla.edu/about/887.cfm</a> That link breaks down hours for each library.

Dude, the parking is ridiculous. I think the more in need of parking you are, the better chance you have. I know for on campus housing people it seems to be harder to get a spot. To me it seems like the farther away you live, the better chance you have to get a spot. So frankly, I wish I had an answer for you.

Hope that helped!

I am going to live on campus for the first year so I will get a parking spot at one of the private garages by the medical center. I will just then bike from the garage to the dorms.

Ooo good idea. How much do those charge?

100 bucks a month, 300 per quarter basically.

But then after paying you’re free to come and go as you please at any hours of the days, correct?

^^^^^^^^^ yes you are.

I’d like that.

Much more than randomly parking in a different street every day, knowing in a garage it’ll be safe.

Oh! Another thought:

Is the “Honors Program” for transfers worth it? I’m wondering what it entails and any benefits of the program. . . . Should anyone know.

:)

@pinoi

Is there a link or anything to those private parking lots?

[Westwood Ca Parking - Parking Lots and Garages, Street Parking](<a href=“]Westwood parking - free or cheap lots, garages and street meter spots”>Westwood Ca parking - free or cheap lots, garages and street meter spots)

Yikes, that is pretty pricey for a parking space. UCLA parking I’m sure can be brutal but at least it is in structures on campus. The bike idea is good though. The campus is incredibly enormous.

what i may do is not bring a car first in fall quarter to see how it goes and then I may bring a car in the following quarters.

Where are you coming from?

Sacramento
