UCLA: housing

Congrats to all admits. I am sure this is a tremendous moment of felicity for all of us.

I applied for "university owned apartments", yet I believe it would be more convenient and affordable to find an apartment outside the campus. Of course, the location cant be too far from campus. What is everyone else doing for housing?? any tenants seeking a roommate?? :D

Go BRUINS!

i went apartment hunting today with my bf, found lots of cute places and a few that we are thinking about seriously putting a deposit down. it is way more affordable to find off campus housing and every single place only has students living in them so it’s basically just like living in the university apartment housing.

I’m looking for an off-campus apartment too. What were the prices like at the places you looked at, sweetnezz? Were they far from campus?

I’m trying to figure out the best way of going about looking for an apartment, or a roommate for that matter. I guess craigslist will probably be my best bet. I guess I should probably try to figure that out soon ;)

i only looked at apartments within walking distance to the school, there is a small area that it basically like a student community basically Gayley, Ophir, Levering St. areas. I am looking for a 1 bedroom and it went all the way from $1200-2400 depending on the place and how new it is. craigslist is definetely a good way to start, especially if you are looking for roomates.

Ok, cool. I’ll keep those streets in mind. What side of campus are they on? I heard that the area near the frats gets kind of crazy, so I want to avoid that if I can.

The thing that sucks about craigslist is that most of the ads are for shared bedrooms and I am looking for my own room.

Did any of the places you looked at have parking? If so, what were the rents like for those units? Was parking extra or included?

hmm, i’m also torn about the housing situation. i really like the idea of living on campus for the 1st year (even though I’m a transfer of course) but the expensive part of that repels me from signing me up that quickly… esp. because I haven’t read many lovely things about UCLA housing… heard wonderful things about the food though! And that would bode well for me as I’m vegan and need as many food options as I can get

Definitely considering off-campus, closeby. And in order to save money that would definitely mean roommate scenario. In a way I really like the social aspect of living on-campus so for me it’s not like, a plus to get away from people or anything. I would really miss an oven/stove though… I make cookies all the time <_<

Being a vegan I feel like you might have a hard time finding decent food through the campus meal plan. I am allergic to gluten and dairy, so a campus meal-plan is a no go, since I need to be able to cook. Did you look into the off-campus university apartments? They have kitchens (although I think they just have stoves, not ovens, though I could be wrong).

aw that sucks about the gluten allergy, that’s an especially tough one I’d imagine! lots of rice v. wheat stuff, right? well, for me it looks like UCLA is prob. the best option as far as food for UC’s (only applied to UCI and UCR in addition to UCLA) but I see what you mean and probably should be more concerned than I am if I’m planning on living on campus, haha. I haven’t submitted my SIR yet or looked in depth for housing options… mostly I was thinking if I do that I would apply for the plazas, but the university-owned apartments also look appealing.

those streets are within close proximity to the frat houses, almost all of the places I looked at that were 1 bedroom came with 1 parking spot and were between the prices stated above. It really depends on where you go and the condition of the place, I would go there, park your car, and just walk in and around the streets taking a look of what you like, it’s all within a 1 mile radius. There are other apartments probably on the opposite side but this seems to be the place where 99% of off campus students live.

vmason, I don’t know if I’m “allergic” to dairy, but I certainly cannot digest it. I guess I just don’t know the difference between a milk allergy and lactose intolerance. But so yeah, I’m in the same boat as you and need my own kitchen. I applied for a university apartment. I prolly wont get it, but worth a try, right?

How are you guys going to pay for housing if you want/need your own room. I need my own room, and I want to stay close to campus, but I don’t know if that is financially possible. I think you can petition to get up to 200 dollars extra a month in loans or what not, if your rent is higher, but that’s still only about 950 a month. argh. there estimates for housing are RETARDEDLY low.

Sopheee, I was lactose intolerant as a kid and kind of “grew out of it,” but I found out recently that a lot of health problems I’ve been having are because of a milk allergy.
I applied for university apartments as well, and I sent in some doctor’s notes explaining why I need a kitchen. Like you, I doubt I’m going to get one, but like you said, it’s worth a shot.

I am going to appeal for a budget increase for housing if I don’t get one of the university apartments. Hopefully I can find an apartment close to campus that I can afford. I reeeeally want to live close to campus and I have really bad sleeping problems, so there’s no way I can share a room. Hopefully it will end up working out w/ the university apartments- if not, I need to find a roommate asap!!

I wanted to live on-campus… But realized it’s around $1600 a month for a plaza.

Off-campus apartments it is then…

I’m on craigslist, but they are all around 5~6 miles from UCLA… not walking distance! Uh oh…

Looks like the theory of natural selection has been debunked in this thread.

what does that mean?

vmason, we can be roommates and make soy lattes.

Sweetnezz, I believe the natural selection comment refers to us ‘weaklings’ being able to survive in the wild with food allergies…

Sopheee, sounds good to me! soy lattes= my favorite! :)

gack!
I think I’m right now leaning toward off campus too…but university owned or non-university owned?! Hmm.

when applying for housing, what is the difference between choosing two room plaza (two occupants) and two room plaza (shared bath) or three room plaza (three occupants) and three room plaza (shared bath)?
