@preppedparent, according to Fall 2017 admit profiles, UCLA was slightly more competitive. But they’re pretty much the same. Historically, Berkeley has had higher test scores, but it looks like UCLA has closed the gap in admissions. This is likely due to the high demand the campus has been experiencing the last couple of years.

H is a bruin and daughter is a golden bear. I can’t play favorites. Other daughter is a Sagehen. I love them all!
I chose UCLA over Cal after being accepted to both. UCLA’s environment and opportunities won me over. I just completed my freshman year and I have been able to do research with some of the nation’s finest at the Jules Stein Eye Institiute, and I volunteer at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (both of which are located on campus). I’ve had caring and extremely competent professors teaching my classes so far. There are endless ways to get involved. Oh, and the FOOD IS THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY! One last thing, you don’t have to walk by hobos on the way to your dorm, like you do at Cal.
https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/freshman-admissions-summary , when it is updated for 2017, should be more informative, since it allows stratifying admission rates by HS GPA ranges for each campus.
For 2014-2016, UCB has been slightly more selective than UCLA for the top two listed HS GPA ranges:
