UCLA Jazz Guitar Audition

Hi,

My son is auditioning for UCLA Jazz on the guitar. Does anyone have info on the format?

Do they ask you which pieces you're prepared to play and pick amongst those? Or you get to play in the order you want to?

Is there live accompaniment? How does it work - you announce the pieces you're going to play and start?

How does the improvisation part work? Do you have a choice in what you improvise over?

Is the sight reading test part of the 15 minutes or is it done separately?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Guitardad, last year UCLA’s jazz guitar auditions were full of surprises. They said in advance (via email and website) there would be no live accompaniment. There was.

It said all over the website there was a theory/sight reading test. There wasn’t (when asked, the man in charge said “Oh, we haven’t done that test for a few years.”). Nice of them to update their and audition email.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about how the order went, but I’m sure that was the opposite of what we were told as well.

Oh, and at least last year the website still said they accepted only VHS auditions. VHS. Didn’t apply to us, but I’m sure that wasn’t the case either.

best thing to do is CALL them
