UCLA Language

Hello everyone, this is my first post, and I hope you guys can help me. I am an international student, and I have completed all IGETC requirement. I am planning to transfer to UCLA for Biochemistry or Biology majors. My first language is Chinese, but I have taken two Chinese classes at Citrus College. One meets Language, and one meets Humanities. When I apply to transfer, will UCLA waive these two classes because I have good proficiency in Chinese.

Thanks!

Even if you do not meet the course requirements, you should be able to take the placement exam in the Chinese language at UCLA; a result placing you into a course higher than Chinese 3 or 3A should fulfill the requirement.

Thanks for your reply. Do I still need to take one more other class to meet Humanities then?

I graduated from a high school in China back to 2005. I am just concerned that UCLA will waive the two Chinese classes I have taken. Then I need to take another class to meet Humanities.

If your CC tells UCLA that you have completed IGETC, you will satisfy UCLA College of Letters and Science general education requirements with IGETC, according to the UCLA College of Letters and Science web page linked above.

You can’t get credit for foreign language courses taken in the U.S. that are your native language if you completed high school (9th-12th) in that language (this refers specifically to languages other than English). UCs have revised the rules in 2011 and began allowing credit for CCC foreign literature courses as long as the courses are teaching literature and not using literature as a vehicle to teach language skills.

You’re very helpful. Thank you so much =]

Thanks for the reply. I hope they will not waive them

You may not get credit for IGETC for those two classes if they are language courses and not literature courses. Bring this to the attention of your counselor, s/he can call or email the UC to verify.
