UCLA Life Science Major Prep

I suppose this applies to other majors too, but does anyone know how strict they are when they say required courses?

My major isn't impacted (Ecology, Behavior and Evolution), but it's apparently very small: only something like 3 people got in for 2007, and their average was 3.85. In the years before, it's a bit lower and pretty much right on where I am (3.5ish). The problem is that I'll only have 5 out of the 7 "required" courses; I'll be missing the 2nd semester of calc and the semester of ochem. I didn't think anything of it until I realized most of the other majors don't say "required".

Also, does anyone know if major prep affects your abilty to be TAP certified? Is being TAP enough to offset the 2 missing courses? I'm terrifically nervous

I’m not sure, but I would recommend putting in the UC update form that you’ll take at least one of the pre-reqs during the summer. It’s better than nothing and, if you get rejected, you don’t have to take it.

I am in a similar situation. I called UCLA admissions last week and asked them how will missing any major prep classes affect me and whether I can make it up in the summer. The IGETC and any remaining major prep classes must be completed by spring, and they will not take summer 08 classes into consideration. If you are missing any major prep classes but finished the IGETC, you are still eligible for consideration but you won’t be as competitive as the other applicants that have finished their major prep classes. At least, this is the case for my major.

Well i’ve seen people get in without ochem or physics or bio. I don’t know about calc though. Don’t they require 1 year of calc? I think you’ll be fine missing 2nd semester of ochem but i don’t know about math. In my case, i only took calc 2 and skipped calc 1 through ap credit and I was accepted. But ucla wanted me to take calc 1 with a letter grade so i have to make up math here. About TAP, if the 2 courses are absolutely required, tap won’t save you. Hope this helps.
