ucla life science transfer question

I searched the forums and couldn't find a simlar question.

As a bio transfer applicant to ucla, would taking biochemistry in the spring increase my chances of admission? All pre reqs will be complete, along with a year of physics, and missing second semester of ochem (cannot take because of schedule conflicting.) Nowhere does it specifically say that biochem is strongly recomended, but it would seem that admissions would like this.

Does anyone have any info reguarding this issue?

Thank you

I can’t say that it would help you all that much other than just further demonstrate your interest in the major. Since it’s not a pre-requisite and even more so since they won’t see your final grade in it until after you’ve already received your admission decision (assuming you already submitted your application). Do you know if it’s considered an equivalent for any classes at UCLA? Maybe Chem 153A or Chem 153L? You’d have to check Assist.org and the articulation agreement for your CC. If it does satisfy an equivalent class at UCLA then if you had taken it earlier and received a decent grade I think it could have strengthened your application. But just the fact that it will be in progress for spring doesn’t show them much other than your interest.

What major are you applying to? I was accepted as an MCDB major this year.

I’ve applied as mcdb also, my gpa should be 3.76 or 3.70 by the end of this semester. Also whats nice is that ill have the equivalency of ls1-ls4 complete. most bio life sci transfers don’t have this because their cc doesn’t offer the complete series equivalent. What gpa did you apply with? Did you complete physics and 2nd semester ochem prior to transfer? What courses you taking currently at ucla?

And yes, it does articulate with biochem and it’s lab at ucla.

Not sure if it’ll help for admission but you should take it if it’s easy…it’ll probably be better than taking Biochem at UCLA. Oh and you’re in for MCDB.

When I applied my GPA was a 3.67, so sounds like you should be fine in that regard. I was fortunate enough that my CC had an articulation agreement that included LS1-4 also in our general bio series and when I applied I had ochem finished, but completed only one semester of physics. I’ve talked to people that didn’t finish either and had similar stats so it doesn’t seem to be that significant. As far as UCLA, I’m actually not enrolled there. I’m currently finishing my first quarter at UCSD, which is great. It’s a bit of funny story though. I was conflicted between the two but ended up SIRing and enrolling at UCLA for summer quarter. I took MCDB 138 which was pretty easy. I feel like it’s a good UD class to get your feet wet and it tends to be a popular elective for other LS majors, which tells you it’s not demanding. Anyway, back in spring I had applied to a research fellowship program at UCSD prior to SIRing, but never heard anything about. However, sometime in July I was contacted by them and they offered me to be apart of their program. Anyway, long story short it was something I couldn’t refuse so I finished the quarter at UCLA, effectively dropped out and late enrolled at UCSD and now I’m here lol. As far as what I’m taking this quarter, if you’re still interested I’m taking a Recombinant DNA lab, Structural Biochem, and Physics. Physics is the biggest challenge, definitely not my strong suit but the other two are pretty fun and interesting. Yup, I’ve had a pretty unusual path so far, but I enjoyed the extremely short time I spent at UCLA and I’m happy to be here at UCSD.
