UCLA Life Science Transfers

Just wondering if there are any life science transfers here? I am missing a second semester of calc but plan on taking it during the summer. I check the UCLA website and it says to be considered for admission a full year must be completed? Is there any other people missing the "required" prerequisites?

Also does anyone know of people with very low GPAs getting in? My friend knows someone who got in with a 2.7 as a biochem major and was just wondering!

If you applied for this cycle, yes it might hurt you somewhat. If that’s the only one you’re missing, it might be okay but you’ll end up having to do 2 quarters of calculus at UCLA (but I suppose you can get around that just by taking it in the summer). I myself am applying for MCDB and I only have 2 quarters of Calculus done…so yeah…worried there. I was told by someone from UCLA that the 2 quarters offered at my school satisfy the major requirement at UCLA…the third is multivariable and I’m NOT doing that LOL…so we’ll see what happens :(

On top of that, I’m missing a bio lab (none offered) and was told that it would make me less competitive. We’ll see…really someone got into UCLA biochem with a 2.7? They must have been really lucky…

I know a lot of LF students are trying to get in their MIMG major…
Molecular, Immunology, M?(*** is this M?), Genetics

Molecular Genetics lol…

Biochemistry is not a ucla life science major.

Ya I’ve heard of a bunch of stories of science majors getting in with below 3.0 gpas. My school is on a semester system and I will have fulfilled all of my gen chem / lab, ochem w/ lab by end of spring, and all equivalent life science bio courses with lab, but no physics. Im only missing the second calculus class which is equivalent to 3b at UCLA.

Oceanpartier, are you required to take multivariable for your major? I am no…only the Calculus 3 series which is only two courses

oops i meant the 31 series and there are only two equivalent courses at my school

i haven’t done calc 2 :frowning: but plan on it during summer!!

The “required” prerequisites are required for a reason, if you won’t have them completed by the end of spring you’ll be rejected.

It seems doubtful that someone got into UCLA with a 2.7 GPA for biochem considering the average GPA admitted last year for the major was 3.77 and that you need a minimum 3.20 UC transferable GPA to be considered for admission at UCLA. Your friend’s friend probably lied to you.

@socal916

^UCI has a 3 course Calc series (quarter system)…

Math 2A - Single Variable Differential Calculus
Math 2B - Single Variable Integral Calculus
Math 2D - Multivariable Calculus
(Math 2E…? beyond my scope LOL).

My major at UCI only requires me to take Math 2A and 2B…as you know…UCLA requires a year. 2 quarters is not a year :frowning: Although I asked them and they said UCI’s 2A+2B satisfies the calc requirement…but I’m still worried.

Anyway…longwinded explanation…but you don’t have to worry about any of that! If you go to a CC, you only need 2 semesters of Calc…and I believe multivariable is a third semester at a CC so you won’t need it. I don’t know why UCI’s Calculus is so sped up…its like they cram a years worth into 2 quarters.

I see. I am just very confused because the 2 calc course at my school are equivalent to the first 2 in the 3 course series at UCLA and I was unsure if I needed to take the third course once I transfer. I planned on taking the second calc class at UCLA during the summer rather than my school and was wonder if that was acceptable considering it is the equivalent at UCLA and there is no equivalent at my school for the 3rd multivariable class according to assist.

And you never know! I saw a thread of low gpas on here get into UCs and I have heard of people getting in with below 3.0 if they have extracurriculars related to their major as well as good essays.

^No, you don’t need to take any multivariable calculus. You only need two semesters of single variable calculus. It seems like you have already finished one semester right? And are planning to do the second semester in the summer? Unfortunately, you can’t take it at UCLA. UCLA is on a quarter system. You need one year’s worth of calculus. One semester (from your CC) + 1 quarter (from UCLA) does not equal one year. So you have the choice of taking one more calculus course at your CC or two more at UCLA. Your choice. Personally, if I was in your position, I’d just do it at the CC and get it over with…I hate calculus so much. And yes, I realize I will be having the exact same problem…

EDIT: Reread your post. If your school only offers the equivalent of up to 3B…that’s really weird. You will have to take Math 3C at UCLA.

Yes I have already taken the first course I just need the second! But I have friends that are missing pre-requisites as well. I know only one semester of OChem w/ lab is required as well as 1 year of bio w/ lab. By the end of spring I will have taken 1 1/2 years of bio with lab and the second semester of OChem with lab as well. I wonder if they will take that into consideration…

I personally do not want to take the second course at my cc because i have heard that the math department is very bad/hard. I took the course online at a different cc and it is equivalent to UCLA, but it is not offered this summer online.

The requirements are pretty black and white I’m not sure why anyone would be confused about them. The OP seems to be hoping that UCLA is going to be lenient on their own requirements.

MIMG applicant here, looking forward to tomorrow!

I’m doing this for my sister.
3.94 GPA
bio major
IGETC
missing Calc 2
finishing 2nd semester of O chem this spring

Based on all of the tricks (fin aid/housing) I think she got rejected :/

But I think the reason she got rejected is because she purposely chose not to take Calc 2. She got a B in Calc 1 (her only B) fall of freshman year and went 3 semesters without trying to take Calc 2, I’m guessing the admissions officers took offense to this.

I need I chance I completely all requirements for the life science major, 1 year of bio with lab 1 year of org chem, up to calc 3, and 3 course calculus based , and completed my IGTCE. My gpa is pretty low though which makes me really nervous: 3.3. I didn’t apply for fafsa so can’t rely on the trick, any opinions would be awesome!

@Ocscout: did you able to apply for housing?

I havent checked tried making an ursa account, I figured it was useless since I didn’t have any financial
