I am planning to apply for Transfer this fall to UCLA. I am still considering majors. I plan on going to medical school after graduating. What's the difference between a biology/Biochem and Chem/Biochem major? Is it as cut-throat as everyone makes it seem?

Is there anyone who can tell me anything about the Mathematics/ Applied Science major at UCLA.

I want to major in something that won't be too cut-throat when it comes to other kids planning on going to medical school, but at the same time I want to learn something that can help me on my MCATs without hindering my GPA.
Any comments would be helpful :)
