UCLA Marching Band

I was curious if it was too late to tryout for the 2007 UCLA Marching Band. Is anyone planning trying out? And I'm a flute/piccolo player, any suggestions as to a good "short piece or etude"?

It's not too late; I'm a flute/picc player too, last year I submited my audtion tape mid July. I think any piece is ok, as long as you sound good.

Record an audition tape NOW, and send it in. Alternately, you can arrange for a live audition when you are on campus for your orientation. Check on the band website for details.

About Auditions
If you have been admitted as a new UCLA student for this coming Fall Quarter, you may audition to be in this year's Bruin Marching Band. You may audition in person at the UCLA campus, or by sending in a taped performance. You may send in a VHS tape, MiniDV tape, DVD, Windows Media Player file, or Quicktime file (audio cassette or audio CD may be sent, but a video format is preferred). If you choose to audition in person, please call the Band Office at (310) 825-3835. In-person auditions for the Band begin in May. Auditions will continue throughout the summer until each section is filled, so it is to your advantage to audition at your earliest convenience, or send in your tape as soon as possible.

thank you guys :) I feel relieved now. And did any of you find it difficult to balance marching band with academics?

nope (colorguard speaking lol)
just take 3 classes, not 4, in addition to marching band and you'll be fine. for your first year make sure there's at least one GE in there to ease the transition.
last year we did a lot of traveling (cal, notre dame) so that ate up some weekends, but this year we aren't going... anywhere. excluding possibility of a bowl game. also you'll be staying at school for thanksgiving break cuz we have a game that saturday, so, just a heads up :)

Some of the professors can be quite accommodating to band members. My son got out of taking a Physics mid-term because he had to be on a band trip. The professor said that he didn't even have to take a make-up test.

ok cool :) Thanks everyone!!! Oh, I have another question, does anyone have the piccolo solo from Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever? I can't seem to find it online.

yea, i had a hard time finding a copy too, had to go through my school music teachers. hmm lemme see if i can find mine, PM me your email :)

How selective is the UCLA Marching Band program? Is it easy or extremely difficult to get in?

I don't think it is either easy or difficult. They look for competency in playing and experience in marching, and it helps if you play brass.

Well, I definately do not play any type of brass instrument-- I play flute/piccolo. I have been playing for 9 years and have had 7 years of marching band experience. I really want to be in the band!!!!!

with all of that experience, it'll definitely show when you audition. well, you aren't marching in your audition, but it can't hurt to mention somewhere about your marching band experience (when/where, etc).
also, at band camp when they're choosing alternates, they'll be able to look at your (very) competent marching and say, "do NOT make this girl an alternate! she's awesome!" :D

Can someone plese send me the Piccolo solo from Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever?!?!?!?! I need to learn it with in the next couple of days. Thanks

sorry, my internet was down for a while, I just sent it to you. my bad!

Thanks :) It's ok.

Hey, I just sent my audition today through e-mail (wmv.). Um, does the band director check his e-mail on a regular basis? Or should I have sent it by mail? Is it too late to audition? And when will I find out whether or not I made it?

I'm pretty sure Gordon checks his email pretty often; they work throughout the whole year, and people are still auditioning in the summer. Last year I sent my audition through email too, about mid July (after orientation), and I got a letter after about a week. I think you should give it up to three weeks; if you don't get a letter by then, then you probably didn't make it.

Thank you sofakingwangsta:) Now all I can do is wait... which sucks lol

Oh, I have another question. If I make it in this year, do I have to tryout again next year?

nope, you're automatically offered a spot for the following year. Thank goodness. I imagine it would be hell for him to re-audition 200 people (or however many that decide to go back)
