UCLA Mechanical Engineering Pre-req Problem

To make a long story short, I messed up in my MATH 48B (precalculus)class at Foothill and I have to retake it again next quarter. The major problem with this is that I am a mechanical engineering major and I need to the whole physics sequence up to Physics 4D for UCLA. If I retake MATH 48B next quarter I can only take up to Physics 4C. Will UCLA not accept me at all if I don't have Physics 4D done by the last spring quarter of next year even with all the other pre-reqs completed?

[ASSIST Report: FOOTHILL 12-13 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major](http://web1.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=FOOTHILL&ria=UCLA&ia=FOOTHILL&oia=UCLA&aay=12-13&ay=12-13&dora=MECH+ENG)

According to the ASSIST sheet, you need the entire Foothill Physics 4B-4C-4D sequence to articulate to UCLA Physics 1B/4BL-1C (of course, you also need Foothill Physics 4A to articulate to UCLA Physics 1A/4AL).

Does Foothill or De Anza offer Physics 4A and Math 1B in the summer? If not, it may be difficult to catch up.

I need MATH 1A to take MATH 1B, which is prerequisite for Physics 4A. I’m going to take MATH 1A during the summer time, but I still can’t finish Physics 4D by the spring quarter because I need to do MATH 48B again.

I feel so stupid…

Does anyone have any advice on what to do or am I completely screwed for any chance of getting into UCLA?

Unfortunately, your chances are next to nothing if you don’t have the entire series finished. You can still apply though, you never know. In the long run, the worst that happens is you’re out 70 bucks. Good luck.

@Integrant, should I just email UCLA?

Dont bother bro. They dismiss students for not even fulfilling the recommended requirements. You will get rejected. Another thing is if you messed up in precalc, your chances my friend do not look very bright at all… they ask for calculus, linear, and differentials, if you missed up in precalc you might not do very well in higher math classes.

Bottom line, sorry to say this, but without the calc classes, and one physics class you dont stand a chance, you will immediately be disqualified.

I’ll just stay for another quarter just to complete the sequence. I took calculus before at this same CCC as a high school student and did well in it. I just forgot a lot of the basic stuff because I took a break from calculus based math and took statistics instead. I just need to stay focused next quarter.

bro… if you passed calculus they can wave your prereqs !

I took it in high school through a CCC and that calc class won’t transfer since I took it as a high school student

Well if the foorhill wont take your calc classes, dont expect UCLA to take them. You will have to stay regardless. If UCLA is welling to accept your calc classes then foothill has to accept them too ! but ig foothill wont then I promise you UCLA wont !.

Are you paying attention? I took the calc class as a high school, which doesn’t count towards any UC because it wasn’t taken in college. I’m going to take calc again at Foothill as a college student so I can count it towards my engineering degree.

If you took calculus at Foothill while in high school, why wouldn’t it count if you passed? Or did you take a lesser version of calculus that is not transferable, or is for business majors?

If you were able to succeed in calculus, why did you go back to precalculus?

thats whats confusing me… Another thing is forget physics for a sec… how will you transfer without the math reqs ???

Good luck to you sir. UCLA gets roughly around a thousand or two applications for the College of Engineering. They will filter you out fast if you don’t have a high GPA and most(as in missing 1 course)/all of your pre-requisite classes done by spring 2013. Almost zero chance here.

@ucbalumnus I took a break from calculus to take statistics and I forgot a lot of stuff. Then when I took the placement test, I was placed in precalculus. My calc class won’t transfer because I took it as a high school student, not as a college student. UCs do not look at college classes taken as a high school student.

@Salim I’m still going to take calc either way

@HopingToXfer I still have a small chance though: “It is possible to be admitted if you are just missing one class. We don’t make agreements or deals that involve the summer terms. I will warn you that Mechanical Engineering is extremely competitive, so it is very difficult to be admitted if you are missing any of the required courses.”
