Is anyone else doing a minor? I am totally stuck as to what to take. I was thinking about doing philosophy but it leaves me with a horrible schedule.

Also, if you take a minor in something that is more fun than related to your major, does that necessarily hurt you're chances in grad school? I was also considering music history because I am genuinely interested in it, but I don't want it to come off as something I did just for a good GPA.

Hoping to take a minor in Geog and one in PolSci, but only if it is not too much of a drag getting the classes. I checked, and you can (generally) use two classes from your major towards a minor as well…for example, I need to take PolSci classes for Global Studies, can use two of them towards a Minor, and so only need to take another couple of PolSci classes to complete.

I think it’s to each his own what majors are “fun,” isn’t it? I also think that if you’re worrying in terms of grad school, just have your minor point you in the general direction you would like to go, especially if you have one of the more vague or broad humanities majors as it is.

For example, I’m an English major. I was attempting to double major in English and communication studies but there is no way that I would be able to do so and stay under the unit cap. Plus, there’s a huge possibility I wouldn’t even get in and I’m worrying about “wasting” classes. I have all of the anthropology prep classes, minus 1 done for the Anthropology major and minor. So, I’m taking on the anthropology minor as well as the global studies minor. Like UCLAGlobal, I’m taking advantage of the fact that 2 classes can overlap between majors and minors. I’m using 2 anthropology classes to cover 2 of the global studies courses. I’m hoping that this will give me an edge as to some “international” education. With this, I’m hoping to either teach abroad for a while, do journalism that involves culture or world affairs, work for a non-profit organization, go to law school for international law or the equivalent for an MBA, etc. etc. I just love learning about other cultures and people and my minors reflect that, I believe.

I don’t think a minor could ever hurt. It can show that you’re well rounded or point you in a specific direction for grad school/research. Personally, I’m planning to minor in either art history, history or international relations to enhance my anthro degree and give me more things to talk about as a culinary anthropologist/journalist…

I had been looking into the music history minor, because I love music more than pretty much anything else, but it doesn’t do much for my womens studies degree. Philosophy would be helpful if I chose to go into law or teaching, but not what I am excited for.

@Liz- How do you know the history of science minor is awesome? You mean in your interests or is this generally acknowledged?

I’m a philosophy major who has been debating between a minor in poli sci, labor studies, social thought, public policy, or history of science.

The public policy minor is pretty popular according to the ucla tour guide and some famous people teach classes on policy.
I want to read all the classics of social and economic/ political economy theory so I’m leaning towards social thought although it does require a senior thesis.

Social Thought also requires a formal application and an essay. It looks like probably the best minor, but it is also difficult to get into it. I wanted to do that over everything, but I will pass on the application process.

i like the social thought minor as well but as a philo major i think it might be a little redunant… maybe not though.

@zenskeptical no i do not actually know anything about the history of science minor, i am just personally interested in it and haven’t found anything like it anywhere else. i was also interested in the public affiars, human complex systems, or the labor studies minors as well.

Are you interested in any particular subset of philosophy? If you’re looking to go into the philosophy of science or something related, I’d say the minor would be a great boon.

(Oh and IIRC, you’re the user who got into Columbia? Nice to see you again. :D)

I’m majoring in anthropology with the minor in history of science et. al. If I could have double majored, I would have.
