UCLA: Most Medical School Applicants in U.S.

haha i was premed from 10th-half of 12th. looking at my activities, it certainly appeared i was headed for med school. haha. 1 of my uc essays was even about it.

and once reality sets in.. that most dont get above a 2.8 unless they are naturally gifted or have no social life... we back out of it

but aren't you a north campuser now? (i forgot what your major is)

when i applied, i had no idea what to major in (i was thinking everything from english to biology )

actually...i still have no idea

i was always a north campuser, even in high school. i just flirted with the idea of premed like everyone else b/c it sounds good.

oh i meant to jasonx88....i already knew you were a north campuser lol

sorry, should have clarified!

yeah and you realize you want to study what you like.

yeah im a north campus guy now ekn111.

Let's crunch the numbers to determine how many stay pre-med:

Size of Fall 2006 freshman enrollment: 4852
Size of Fall 2006 freshman pre-med enrollment: 4852 * 0.18 = 873
Estimated number of Class of 2010 medical school applicants: 704 * 4852 / 4209 = 811
(based on the aforementioned AAMC Class of 2005 census, scaled up from the Fall 2001 freshman enrollment of 4209 to compensate for the increased Fall 2006 freshman enrollment)
Pre-med attrition rate: (873 - 811) / 873 = 0.071

If my calculations are correct, only 7.1% of the incoming pre-meds will give up before their peers apply for medical schools -- seems unrealistic from the attrition rates among my peers, though. One would think the LS 1-4 series alone would weed out 25% of the pre-meds out there. Are you sure, Jasonx88, that 18% of the freshman class is pre-med? I was expecting something higher... What's your source?

mmmm, according to the career website approx. ~18% (+700) will apply to med school. ~9% (+350) will actually be accepted. ucla's admission rate fluctuates in the 50% range

i'd probably say that the incoming percentage is around 20-30%? just a guess

http://career.ucla.edu/GraduateSchool&PreProfessionalServices/UCLAFourYrMedSchoolAdmissionsHistory.asp

is the LS series that difficult? I'm...scared now. boo.

if ls takes care of that much, i'd hate to see how much orgo takes out

=

what about Physics?

flopsy,
my source was a survey done at orientation. they provided the statistics from last years incoming class and decided to show us. they said it pretty much stays stable from year to year but it used to be around 25% of the incoming freshies who were premed.

I would think 25-30% would be more reasonable; some undeclared students probably decide to become pre-med during their undergraduate career. Also, I can confirm that the LS series is as crazy as it sounds. I actually invested as much effort into LS 1 as my engineering classes (e.g. reading each textbook chapter ahead of its corresponding lecture and proof-reading my CPR essays) and ended up with a B because of the silent curve-destroyers who hoard all the A scores.

does the LS series stand for life science?

Yes.

hmm...thanks flopsy for the insight...

i wonder why most of the students i asked said LS wasn't that hard

now i'm really glad i didn't choose LS1 first quarter...came pretty close to it though

Don't believe it for a second... ekn111, the reason why your peers told you that the LS series "wasn't that hard" is because they want you to adopt a false complacency. That way, they'll improve their chances of beating the curve, since they've already eliminated one of their competitors through pre-emptive mental conditioning. Prepare yourself!

haha...that's harsh!

that's why alot of students look down on premeds.. we're nothing more than grade grubbers

well...you guys have to be since gpa means pretty much everything
