A friend of my D attended the program for two summers and really enjoyed it.

P.S. My own D did the Theater Workshop, Performance for the Camera and College Audition Workshop over three summers. She especially enjoyed Performance for the Camera.

I was very busy this summer and didn't have time to do the conservatory, but I did the college audition workshop at ucla (1 week) and it was amazing. We had 3 very very strong teachers, no problems with any of them, and I learned more in 6 days then I previously thought possible. However, it was very intensive, so don't go if you arent ready to work... up and out of the dorms at around 7 or so every morning and not back in your dorms till after dinner at around 7. I highly recommend this program (and i'm assuming that the conservatory is just as good).

Can you tell me how you liked the program? Did most students go on to audition there? Is there a higher acceptance rate for those who did the program at UCLA?

I would be very interested if anyone has a reply to “vocal” question…
I wanted to know if anyone knew if there is a higher acceptance rate to students who attend these theater camps at UCLA?
I’m a student from Sydney Australia completing my final year of high school and I’m planning to apply for UCLA starting September 2010, wanting to major is musical theatre and/or play writting.
Does anyone know much about what UCLA is looking for in a student?

UCLA gets more freshman applications than any other school in the US about 45,000 per year. The average GPA to get accepted is 4.2 (waited) The school is VERY academic. I do not know the number of auditioners to the Ray Bolger MT program but I do know it is difficult to get in. The summer program is not really run through UCLA although it uses some UCLA faculty members.
My daughter did the program after her freshman year and had fun but did not find it very intensive. The audition workshop (1 week) is a bit better I was told by someone who attended and the conservatory (3 weeks) is a bit more intensive. We have a friend who attended the conservatory and learned a bit but he was dissappointed in the level of the students who were attending.
Many CC posters have emphasized that it is not a good idea to attend a summer program with the thought of getting fast tracked into that school-- attend it for the training and perhaps to get a feel for the school to see if you want to audition.
Best of luck to you…UCLA is a great school and a beautiful area. Southern California is a great place to live!

I want to second what CalMTMom said, my D attended the MT program at UCLA, had fun, but came away underwhelmed with the level overall. If anything, she knew that UCLA was not “the place” for her, as she really did not like the school/campus (go figure, it’s beautiful, but ultimately this is very personal, and perhaps since we live in CA she wanted a break from palm trees :)). Attending the program has absolutely no bearing on getting accepted into UCLA. As CalMTMom says, UCLA gets indeed a lot of freshman applications, but obviously not all those 45,000 applicants list Theatre as their intended major :D.

The program is not connected to UCLA other than being located on their campus. You can get a feel for the campus and whether you would like attending there. My daughter did not like the feel of the campus. Her roommate loved it. It is very personal so living there for a week is very helpful.

You can also do additional work while there to obtain UCLA class credits. This might be helpful when applying to UCLA, I don’t know.

My d’s main complain was constantly hearing from the instructors, “not a good choice for your audition song” over and over, but even though asked, the instructors would give ZERO instruction on a direction to look towards for a good choice for a song. She left feeling very discouraged about what song to sing and if she would ever find a ‘good’ one.

When I attended the final day showcase I was made aware of the very unprofessionalism of the camp counselors. They were sitting in the audience with us and would cheer for their favorites and literally say mean things to each other (which I could hear) about their non-favorites. I worried me that these were the folks that were in charge of the kids when they weren’t in class.

If we were to do-it-all-over I think we would go some place else. I also think one week is not enough, we would look for a longer program.

I want to go to ucla (:
