Could it be because the use of both Berkeley and “Cal” dilutes the name power? I think at least in California, both parents and kids think of Cal as more stressful. Not everybody “dreams” of that.

What AlejandroMagno said…

I really don’t believe that Berkeley didn’t make it to the list at all!

@shrinkrap that’s probably true about Cal’s reputation as more stressful :(. What can we say? Its hard work being #1 I guess haha.

The idea of the brand name that UCLA has is on the money. I’d have to say UCLA is more widely recognized. In response to the original post, I can understand why UCLA is viewed as more of a dream school than Cal. UCLA has that big time feel in LA as opposed to UCB and the wonderful community of Berkeley…

The only thing cool about Cal is Marshawn Lynch

[YouTube - Marshawn Lynch College Highlights 1](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhr8oYBoiUI)

what about uc davis? how well known is it?

UCLA is well known because they actually have an international marketing department that sells sportswear and other UCLA brand all over the world. This allows UCLA to generate additional $1 million dollars of revenue.

Lol, I don’t think Davis is well known outside CA at all. I know a lot of foreign exchange students, and none have heard of UC Davis or Irvine, some have heard of San Diego, and they’ve all heard of LA and Cal. East coasters seem to be familiar with Cal, LA, and USC - probably 'cause of football.

oh thats lame. at least most californians know about it

well duh. Think about it. It is THE #1 UNIVERSITY WITH THE MOST APPLICATIONS. This is nationwide.

and 2)Sports teams! Basketball, Football, swimming, track and field. Do you have any idea how many Olympic gold medalists went to UCLA?

UCLA has everything…academics, sports, med school, girls, weather (law school isn’t really in the tip top, but its top 20), nightlife…it really is, if you think about it, the perfect campus.

I would never want to go there, never have, because I cannot stand LA traffic.

^^ I have to agree. LA traffic on the 405/5 freeway is horrible. Also UCLA gets smoggy

Eh. I love LA, though. Also, who takes the 5? I guess if you were going to, like, Irvine or something. Many LA buses run 24 hours, and they’re opening an expansion of their rail line into West LA/Culver City in a few months. East of Highland, you can just take the subway/train everywhere.

Also, LA music. LA food. LA bars. LA art. LA random warehouse parties on San Pedro in Chinatown…

LA… greatest city in the world.

Phil Knight and Nike have probably made the University of Oregon the most branded name in the world and most people would say that the Ducks victory at the Rose Bowl puts them at the top of the heap of Pac 10 athletics. Academically, it is a very ordinary state university.

UO is not the state university, OSU is. UCLA is bay far the biggest promoter of itself. They want freshman out there being cheerleaders for its school. I’m on UCLA campus right now and see it every day. UCLA and Stanford are stronger in their graduate level than on the undergraduate level for most subjects. Cal has a stronger undergrad overall. As mentioned, popularity based on the tradition of UCLA sports teams and marketing of the school does not make it stronger academically. UCLA is #1 among many students very much due to its location. There aren’t many other universities in the USA were one can wear summer clothes and enjoy weeks of 70 degree sunny weather during the winter months.

LA sux lol. The Bay is where its at.

^^Gloomy, cloudy weather majority of the time at the Bay => dull!!!

UCSB is where its at. http://www.ucsb.edu/images/design-2010/slideshow/4-campus-air.jpg
No smog, beach, 2 hours from LA, isolated into the wilderness, town runned by college students, and beach.

@lawlking

don’t be fooled like I was. We may not have smog but we have fog. And we may be on the beach but it is dirty…It is NOT quite the paradise you see in the picture.

And I am not sure what you mean by “isolated by the wilderness”. I think that is more UCSC…

I think he means the freshman getting crazy and stumbling and puking in the streets.

This is something about Americans/Californians that I will never understand. I keep hearing about people picking UCLA and UCSD over Berkeley, and sometimes even expensive private schools (like NYU) over Berkeley. I really, really do not understand.

Before we moved to the states, we knew of Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale (and MIT, but that’s because my father’s an engineer). We had never even heard of Brown or Dartmouth or Cornell, and certainly not of UPenn. I know that if by some miracle stroke of luck I got accepted into Brown and Berkeley, my parents would see it as a complete tragedy if I chose Brown. That’s how the rest of the world sees Berkeley. It’s in the top of the top.

When I visit relatives/friends living back in Israel or various countries in Europe and say I’ve applied to such and such UCs, they always gasp at the name Berkeley. UCLA elicits the same blank response that Santa Barbara does. Not to say that I wouldn’t be ecstatic if I got into UCLA–It would be a dream come true–but Berkeley is always going to be the top in my mind. By far.

all depends on department and what major at any of those schools mentioned which are all top notch institutions. Besides quaint Dartmouth, all the other are practically their own city and are the largest employers in those locations.
