UCLA no party scene?

I went on a tour. The tour was being given by a Senior at UCLA, and when he went on to the social aspects I was quite confused. He said that UCLA is a dry campus, this is strictly enforced and that people get expelled every year for drugs or alcohol in the dorms. He said, overall, the campus is very quiet and well to do, that very few people drink. He has been there for 4 years and only has been offered a drink once.

He also said that the fraternities at UCLA are not like the ones at other schools, that they are more focused and professional, rarely party and that they are inspected not to have any alcohol. In general he stressed there are no drugs or alcohol within reach of most students, and that most people who are into this stuff have to go off campus or something. He's in a frat as well which really confused me.

Anyway, do y'all have a comment on this? This is in stark comparison to UCSB, which in their 4/20 edition of the newspaper told students the best places to have sex on campus and how to enjoy weed and alcohol together. That's not to say that I'm a stoner or alcoholic, but partying and having a joint once in a while is a significant part of my life. But I'm being told that this is not the case in UCLA - what can you say of it?

UCLA is a crazy party school. number 1 in LA

it's no USC or UCSB, it isnt the number 1 party school in any stretch of the imagination but it's not UCSD either. IT's COLLEGE. TONS of kids drunk in college. frats arent ALL about partying but its still an integral part of their thursday an d friday nights. alchool is stricly banned in dorms but if your discreet about it its fine... so no big parties in the dorms, but apartments have many on weekends. if you want parties, it's more than accessible.

so basically that senior is very much wrong, maybe he was trying to sell a squeaky clean image of the school

Well...he IS a tour guide trying to promote to UCLA to underage students and parents.

People here drink, smoke, hookah, party, have sex, etc. Most people I know have either drank or been offered a drink, and people do drink in the dorms all the time, but they keep it on the dl so they don't get in trouble w/ the RAs. It's your typical college campus. What's great about it is that UCLA's what you make of it. You can pick and choose what you wanna do, and guess your tour guide just wasn't into that kind of stuff.

BTW, which frat is he in? There are tons of multi-interest ones like pre-law, pre-med, Christian, Armenian ones, so he most likely wasn't in one of the IFC ones.

If you want to drink, you have to have the intention to drink. Analagous to friendships, friends don't appear as a "gift", you have to take the initiative to seek new people, network, and get along.

I don't know who your tour guide was, but there are many professional fraternities on campus. I would say that every frat has a drinking event and "encourages" it at least once a year besides AGO, possibly APO, A-Chi, and Triangle (only listing the larger frats).

Obviously, as a tour guide, he can't tell you the "Secrets" of UCLA life just yet. Many people have alcohol in their rooms and it gets passed along safely. To buy alcohol, one obviously has to buy it off campus.

There was a mini-mini-section about this in the Daily Bruin as well.

To sum it up, you are the navigator. Whatever your intentions are, you will end up following. There are plenty of people who drink and UCLA. However, the ratio of those who do to those who don't is slimmer at UCLA than SB and SC.

UCLA is one of the worst party schools even in California. There are campuses with frats which are ~10x better than those of UCLA, speaking of a partying scene sense.

Not true - in fact, the official policy of on-campus housing is that as long as you keep/drink it in your room with the door closed and aren't too loud (i.e. basically don't give anyone a reason to call the RA on you), its totally permissible to drink in your room. I don't know where that guy was getting his info from.

i know for a fact that guys in ago who want to drink just walk over to triangle, which is absolutely not dry

alcohol is very present here, you just need to get to know some people and not hole yourself up in ccc or something like that. pot is everywhere too, db was toking in the suites this one night even, and we get "funny smells" all hte time.

the frats are... well, seriously, what do you expect. pre-party! pre-preparty! pre-pre-preparty! drunk people everywhere

btw that sig nu party was ****, and not in a good way

I wonder why their rush events were dry.

...Whenever I vist my friends at UCLA I stay at one of the frats. You can be sure there is drinking, smoking, partying, and sex at UCLA. Your tour guide is either ignorant of what people are really doing, or choosing to present the school in a picture perfect manner.

over half the people on the tours are parents. parents generally have the view that UCLA is a "good school" with high academic standards. if they hear from the tour guide that alcohol and drugs are commonplace or at least easily accessible and that theres parties all the time, do you really think the parents will let their innocent valedictorian come here?

its all about who you associate with and what you make of your college career. if you stick around people that dont drink and party, well guess what...you're never gonna get to drink and party. if you stick around partiers, you can be sure someone will know something thats going on.

but really, why is it surprising that students get expelled every year for drugs and alcohol? underage drinking is illegal. drugs are illegal. do you expect the school to just look the other way when they find it? obviously theyre not going to kick you out for just being caught drinking in the dorms...it'd have to be something really really serious or many many many repeat offenses (not sure of the actual grounds for expulsion). im sure people get kicked out of the known "party schools" like UCSB, UCSC, etc every year too.

The fraternity scene at UCLA is shrinking. The proportion of undergraduates choosing to remain in on-campus housing for their sophomore/junior/senior years is increasing every year. 2006-2007 has had the highest proportion of students living on campus. Meanwhile, more parties are being held outside of fraternity houses, either in the dorms or the apartments.

its because frat parties SUCK SUCK SUCK

a ratio of 10 girls to 1 fug guy

rush events HAVE to be dry

Why do they have to be?

npc regulations

UCLA has parties every week, just like any other college. We don't go WAYYYY over the top as some other UC's do but it's still really fun and a little sane =p

Several years ago there was a huge alcohol fest held during Fraternity Rush. There was a some kind of trouble, and as a result alcohol was banned from future rush events.

Your UCLA experience is what you make of it...

I would say UCLA has the right balance...

does anybone kno of any other colleges in california that are top party schools?
