UCLA non-univ apartments

I'm a transfer from UConn, and I really don't know much about the westwood area. I was given a housing assignment in Hitch, but seeing how it is so expensive without my own room, I'm thinking of going off-campus. I was wondering how life differs in a non-university owned apartment. Are you out of the loop in the social scene? It's pretty important to me that I get my own living space.. anybody have suggestions?

No not at all off campus apartments are awesome too and you pay way less for sooo much more I found an off campus apt within 5 min walking distance from campus anf I'll be paying $500 a month for my own room I will have to arrange cable and phone but its still a bargain. I found several other apt which were really good put a little further away for as cheap as $400 its really a steal in an area like westwood. But off campus is still chill bro most of the frat houses are off campus and there are always parties and weswood is really close and there's a lot of stuff to do there like catch a movie, have coffee, a burger, a small concert or just walk around the stores and meet people. There's in n out, rite aid, coffee bean, starbucks, and tons of other eateries and bars around the off campus apts in westwood I think its better to live in an off campus apt than the dorms which are full of freshmen and en d to be really quiet and boring. its what you prefer though but youd be missing out and paying a ransom by living on campus.

Really appreciate the post. When you looked for apts, did you go onto craigslist and the ucla database or did you find apt complexes to rent from?

I went to westwood and basically looked up the webpages or the phone#'s of the apts I was interested in. This was convenient for me because I live 15min away from ucla but I really suggest you going there in person to see the apt in person and ask for lease and rent prices.

You live 15 minutes away from UCLA and you're getting an off-campus non-UCLA apartment? What’s the point of that? It will take you more than 15 minutes to walk to class.

Yeah but 15 min in LA traffic can turn to 45 min plus I'd rather hang around campus and walk to class than have to get up early to find parking since most likely I will not qualify for parking because I live close to campus. Also I live with my family three little brothers and studying is not a possibility.
