By some strange miracle I got into both these crazy amazing schools. I am currently aiming to major in Communications, but there's a good chance I'll change it (Ideally something in the same sort of field, though). Also, both are the same price for me. Here's the situation with both:

UCLA: I am undeclared for the L&S college since freshman can't declare comm major, which is kind of attractive to me to be able to try lots of stuff but also scary since it's hard to get into their comm program. I live about an hour away, and UCLA has been my secret dream school for a while now mostly because its name, and I've grown to love the atmosphere and campus. I toured over summer, and I did enjoy it but I don't think it quite lived up to my expectations. I like the area of LA and like being close to home, but it's not as good academically as Berkeley and I'd kinda feel foolish turning down Berkeley. which brings me to...

Berkeley: It was so weird getting into Cal because it was never something I considered as an actual possibility. I mean, it's obviously an awesome academic school, but I had never pictured myself there. I'm in the media studies major there. I visited for open house, but it was so crowded and I wasn't impressed and felt out of place in the surrounding area. Also, Cal is 7 hours from home, which I don't know how to feel about. I do love the bay area, but the area immediately around Berkeley kinda turned me off. Also, I feel like I might be out of my league academically (I mean, I honestly don't know how I got in).

So, should I trust my gut or not let my predisposed feelings sway me? I'm posting this in both school's groups so I can get a good idea from both sides of the coin. Thanks for any and all help!

For communication, I thought UCLA is definitely a better school for that specific one. Follow your heart then lol

I agree … I thought UCLA had a much better communications program. What’s the acceptance rate into the major at UCLA? If you don’t get in, what would your fallback major be? At Cal, is it an uncapped major, or is it also a competitive application process? Where do you ultimately want to be working?

UCLA. Cal has Media Studies which is not really anything like Communications

My second choice major would probably be sociology or anthropology, but I am still pretty unsure. I like the idea of writing working in the media or something of the sort (maybe a journalist?). I’m even interesting in public relations and advertising, but I’m on the quiet side so I don’t know if I’m cut out for it.

The only info I could find on the comm admit rate was the transfer admit rate from 2010, which was 10%, which is scary low.

@mothergoldenbear ^ sorry forgot to tag my response

@lostinmymind Wow, that’s a tough one. For communications and media, I think LA is the place to be. Better program and better job opportunities. For sociology and anthro, my guess is that Cal has the better program (since they say that every one of their programs is in the top 10 in their respective fields). You got into both Berkeley and UCLA, so I’m guessing you didn’t get in by the skin of your teeth … you might have a good chance of being in the top 10%.

I was in the same position as you until last weekend. I was leaning towards Cal and literally was 99% sure I’d go there but then I did a UCLA overnight and everything changed. I’m majoring in a biological science so it was tough because both schools are strong with science. And yes, it does seem Cal is a bit more prestigious but UCLA is also prestigious, especially in LA, where it’d be better for jobs relating to communications. And some alumni I heard talk said the UCLA name helped them get some jobs so, UCLA has a good name too. I also like the Academic Advancement Program (AAP) among other programs, the warm weather( I have minimal winter clothes and a low cold tolerance), AWESOME food, and school spirit (with the USC rivalry). So I chose UCLA last night

But you don’t have to rely on what I said to make your choice, but this is just how I thought out mine when I was in the same position as you. So hopefully this helps. You’d be fine at either school to be honest.

@julijewelz thanks so much for your input! I also ended up SIRing to UCLA and I’m super happy with my decision. Maybe I’ll see you there next year! :)

@lostinmymind I’m glad you were able to come to a decision. It sounds like the perfect choice for you. If you think of it, come back and let us know if you got into the communications program (or if you decided not to even apply). It won’t really matter, but it’s like knowing the end of the story. lol
