UCLA or Boston College??

Right now i am a California Community College student with a 3.6-3.7 GPA as a Philosophy Major. I really want to transfer to a school in boston, which there are many of, but since i will most likely get into UCLA, what schools in Boston area would you consider being acceptable to choose over UCLA?? ( Other than ridiculous school like Harvard and MIT) such as:

Boston College
Boston University
Amherst College
UMass
Northeastern

I wouldnt choose any of those over UCLA tbh, even though I’m (or am about to be) a USC trojan :)

If anyone then maybe Boston College, or Amherst… but isnt amherst also like ridiculously hard to get into? like the #1 LAC?

Ugh its so difficult to decide…

On one hand, UCLA is so much cheaper and very prestigious

But on the other, moving to an east coast city would be an amazing experience that could be once in a life time because i cant envision not living in LA after college.

Try Tufts.

tufts is good too yea, but im guessing theyre more of a science school? or am i wrong ?

im sure moving to the east coast could be a great experience, but yea, also think about the money! is it worth it ?

who knows, im sure you could get a job on the east coast for a year or 2, that way you wouldnt be stuck there after college at ucla, but youd still get to experience it :)

Your title makes it sound like you’re a lock into BC and UCLA…

With a 3.7 at a CA CC you’re by no means guaranteed admission into either… Barring other things, I doubt you’ll get into Amherst b/c of your stats mentioned and the nature of small LACs (very few transfers accepted). BC is a reach. BU is a match, and Northeastern+UMass are match/safety.

Unless I got into Amherst or BC I wouldn’t even consider turning down UCLA. The other schools are just not comparable in terms of reputation or academics. The only scenario in which I could see you turn down UCLA for BU/NE/UMass would be if BU gave you a full ride. Heck not even that. If BU PAID you to go.

If you’re talking pure prestige I would only consider going to Amherst over UCLA. BC is a great school, prestigious but not enough to warrant the enormous amount of extra money you would have to pay at a private school.

yea exactly, BC could be worth it, but thats a money question… also, im sure ucla would be better since you want to work in LA so…

I know im not a lock into either school…but for ucla im just above the average gpa for my major and have stellar ec’s but i know that youre not in until youre actually in…

Yeah id love to go to BC, and hopefully they would give me some good financial aid, but its so hard to get in there. 75/1800 applicants or something like that got into there last year

Those are expected yield #'s, not admit #'s. They need to fill 75 open spots, but may admit 200. Not every admitted student ends up matriculating.

Thanks treebounders…that gives me a little more hope. but BC also requires to send your HS information ( which i did not do too well in), but i dont know how much they take this into account in deciding

i dont know exactly what UCLAs stats are, but if you feel that youre above the average(counting both GPA and EC’s), then why dont you try Berkeley ?
Also, you could check USC? awesome school if i may say so myself :stuck_out_tongue: im going there this fall

also, a bad HS record wouldnt necessarily hurt your chances, for one thing, depending on how long youve been in college, theyll look less and less at your HS transcripts… and also, having a bad HS record and then doing great in college shows a positive trend which most colleges like to see in their students :)

Average acceptance for Philosophy at ucla is 3.5.

and i will try berkeley and usc as well…but i would prefer UCLA over berkeley just because SOCAL is way better fit for me than NORCAL…and unless USC gave me some kick ass financial aid then i couldnt see myself picking them over ucla even though it is an amazing campus/school.

I think you need to take into consideration BC’s admission standards/requirements. I remember looking at schools on the east coast, and BC’s requirements included theology/religion classes among other things that Cali CC schools don’t tend to offer. I may be confusing it with another catholic school, but I remember reading that made me cross it off my list.

BTW for things like philosophy there’s very few schools that would be considered better or on par with UCLA or Berk. BC isn’t one of them.

I got into both UCLA and Boston College, and was mainly choosing between UC Berkeley and Boston College. I ended up choosing BC for many reasons, and didn’t regret the choice one bit…until I got into Duke! (BC deposit is much more expensive, hehe)

Boston College is supposed to be an amazing school. Personally, I would pick between BC or UCLA out of all the schools on that list.

Pros of UCLA: I love Los Angeles, 10 min from the Beach, Amazing weather, #9 Philosophy department in the country, Much cheaper than BC

Pros of BC: Boston is ranked one of the best college towns in the US, if not the best, It would be a great experience to live in the East Coast for two years, Public transportation is amazing in the East Coast, Beautiful Campus, and there is just something about colleges in the east coast that seems amazing

Plus, my girlfriend will be going to BC next year…and were sorta, kinda, in love lol this is the only reason i am considering BC but i have fallen in love with the campus and city of boston in researching it, other than it has the weak ass celtics in the city, im a laker fan lolll :-)

oh gawd…

Well, in terms of US Report rankings, UCLA is higher…but seriously, I think BC is the better school in terms of size, etc.

well ok listen… dont base your decision off your gf, please dont… dude youre only 20! youve got your whole life ahead of you… dont go do everything she does, thats just a waste of your life… do what you want

honestly, id probs go ucla… this coming from a newly-made usc trojan ^^ ofc usc would be better than ucla… but ucla is cheaper…
