hey, i got accepted to UC: Davis, LA, Santa Barbara, and Irvine so far…i’m waiting for letters from both berkeley and san diego…
i’m majoring in biology and was wondering which school could offer me the most opportunities in that area…I’m sort of deciding between Davis and LA. i don’t want to go to santa barbara or irvine.

LOL, umm.. ok, 2vulgar4cc. o_0 ... anyways, lyrical, what schools are u deciding between? davis and LA, too?? my friend said that she was in the same dilemma and proposed a solution: list of pros and cons....hehe, try it if you're desperate

If pure notability is most important to you(like it is to most people on this site), LA has an advantage in that area. However, it seems that this is not the case. I'm not entirely sure which is better in the Biology major, but I'm sure they are both well respected in that area. Have you visited both Davis and LA? If not, you probably should, as doing so will likely help a lot in your decision.

i don't know...i really really want to go to LA, but that would be like being selfish. i think i put my parents through enough...how the heck could we bring all my stuff to a dorm room hundreds and hundreds of miles away? i don't think we could afford to depend on the airplane as a common commuter ... oh wells... T_T

saddream87, majoring in biology is not the question. what do YOu want to do with the biology major is the question. that will better help determine if davis or LA is a better fit for you.

uclover8, grad school is not the key to success. you are the key to your own success.

Check out both schools, UCD is an ever-growing campus that provides a great education, especially in Bio. I've had friends that have transferred from LA not liking it at all and completely loved Davis. My one friend do not like the city life of LA, while really enjoying the community in Davis. From student life to the small town feel, people our really friendly and really laid back. You won't see any girls walking around in Gucci or Prada, you fall off your bike and 20 students will stop to ask if your all right, it's just a refreshing feeling. At Davis we have the students that worked really hard in high school but instead of studying for SATs on Friday we went out and enjoyed life. It's like we have a really smart student body but not one that gets super stressed on finals week, we're laid back like that. In my opinion Davis provides the best college experience of all the UCs, check my other posts if youre interested. Anyways, either school you'll choose youre going to have a great time in college.

First let me point out that i am a UC Davis student, and i love the school. From the people to the resources and the town i love this place.
Moving right along i believe that davis is not for everyone. And acessing your goals should be the number 1 step in deciding between UCLA and UCD.
If your goals are purely academicly based, and you want the most challenging education, with the smartest people who also study during their free time, then UCLA is probably for you.
However if you want to go to a school with very smart people, who also have an active social life, and live in a less stressful environment that is not competition based, but rather cooperation based, then UCD is for you.
UCLA does have some of the best and brightest in the nation, this is true, but this is because the individuals that go there are in constant competiton with eachother, and the atmosphere there is that you need to beat your neighbor. Where as at Davis its more focused on understanding the material ratehr than just doing better than everyone else in your class.
Over all if your looking purely for top notch education UCLA would be the right school for you.
However, Davis is not far behind when it comes to academics, however in every other category such as recreation, community, and just the general atmosphere i would greatly prefer Davis over LA.

For me Davis was the perfect option, and getting my acceptance here meant i was going here, and i have not regretted my decision ever since day one. So i urge you to think what you really want you college experience to be like, and then make the correct choice, becuase in all honesty prestige does not mean much when it comes down to it, and stress is not fun. so i wish you all good luck in making the right choice for you.

Make a list of what you want in a school and compare it to what these schools offer. Both schools are top schools, if you like a more bucolic campus - Davis is obvious. If you like more of an urban environment UCLA. Overall, UCLA is better known and respected.

It's much more well respected. Plenty of people get D's on their transcript and still get accepted to Davis. Would you still want to hang out with those people?

Of course, if Berkeley accepts you, go there simply because a Berkeley degree is just as good in India, Europe, China, Indonesia as in the USA. All the other UC's degrees diminish in value as you move farther away from the school.

UC davis does not have the smartest people. UCSD, Berkeley, and UCLA get that honor. The smartest Bio people are at UCSD... generally. The smartest Engineering and Chemistry researchers and students in the USA are in Berkeley. UCLA is very well rounded, so no matter what major you choose, you would be able to succeed.

My take .....go to the one closest to home (cheapest) for ugrad, and then go to the best Ivy/ near-Ivy school you can get into for grad. Many UCD students with a 3.8 GPA make it into some of the best schools for grad studies.

However, if you're not planning grad school, go to UCLA.

One thing is for sure, it is definatly NOT a no brainer decision! I personally have 3 friends here at Davis who came from my high school to Davis with acceptances to both Davis and UCLA, sure i have friends who chose UCLA in the same situation, but the point is that UCLA is not for everyone. I also have friends who chose Davis over UCSD simply becuase it was not the place for them.
The decisions you make must be made by you and only you, and i urge you to go to the campuses check out the area, and see which you can see yourself in for 4 years or more. Also check out the people there, see if you think you would fit in. Deciding colleges can not be made on presige or respect for the school, or you could make an entirely wrong decision.
Bottom line, choosing between two top notch schools like UCD and UCLA is a decision that can not be made easily, Every factor should be taken into account, unless all that matters to you is the prestige of the school.

The good thing about UCLA is that even though you might not like the campus, you always have Los Angeles, which is huge, to make it your playground.
