I know these are two drastically different schools, but there are different things I'd like to consider. My main reasons for going to either school:

Stern: Internship opportunities; Stern > UCLA academy-wise; it's in NYC (lots to do there). Good alumni network.

UCLA: It's in Cali! Sunny beaches etc. Also IT HAS A CAMPUS, and it seems less stressful than NYU.

So basically NYU = paving better path for future, but UCLA = happier.

Any suggestions? How are internship opportunities at UCLA? And jobs? Also I'm worried about its stability since the Cali gov't is slashing funds and some majors and teachers are in danger of being cut.

Thanks!

I think you exaggerate the degree NYU is stronger than UCLA academic-wise. NYU Stern is #11 to UCLA Anderson #14. Also, note for undergraduate rankings, UCLA is actually ranked a bit higher than NYU. We’re #24 vs #32. Now I understand that UCLA does not offer an undergraduate business program, but there are many internship opportunities available here. From what I hear, we get roughly the same firms as Berkeley (which is ranked considerably higher than UCLA and NYU). Also, there is strong recruitment amongst the Big 4.

The reason I would pick NYU over UCLA would be less likely that it is academically stronger and more to escape the class sizes of public education. If you’re OOS and going to pay ~$50k, I think a private school holds more value.

If you are interested in getting a job in NYC area, by all means go to NYU Stern. But if you are interested in landing a job in west coast region, UCLA will give you a much better chance of finding a job here, for an obvious location reason.

Through most of the on-campus interviews, the best way and least painful way to get a job, NYU would get you connected with a job prospect in NYC, and you wil find it exceedingly diffcult to get some network help in arranging an interview with recruiting people specifically for west coast region. Sure, you can do some legwork, but it would be really, really difficult.

Barring this job offer prospect, the decision should really come down to just how much focus you are willing to allocate your academic curriculum to the field of business and finance.

If business curriculum is all you want and you are dead-set on majoring nothing but business, by all means go to NYU Stern and you will be happy.

But if you are interested in expanding your academic interests and curriculum that might include some strong dose of liberal arts education (Yes, you can get some great liberal arts education at UCLA), then strongly consider UCLA.

In terms of reputation, UCLA edges out NYU in international scene. Perhaps the same line of reasoning would apply as well to the Southern California scene. But the perception might be different in NYC. So again, it really depends on where you want to settle down.

BruinLifer is pretty spot on.

If you’re looking to work in NYC (or the east coast in general), NYU would be a good choice.

Thanks, guys. Your comments are very helpful, I really appreciate it.
