UCLA or UC Berkeley

lol I'm pretty sure that a few people are having a hard time with this. This thread usually pops up once a year but I've yet to see it so here we go! Any thoughts anybody?

Literally my exact dilemma at this very moment.

I feel like Berkeley has more weight nationally and worldwide for job prospects.

My heart is telling me to go to UCLA but my head is screaming Berkeley haha. I can’t make up my mind.

Same problem :\ and I can’t wait too long because fall transcripts are already due June 1 so are housing apps :expressionless:

I kind of feel the same way @CalBruin.
Heart = UCLA, because of the good vibes, adventure of being in a totally new place, and opportunities for music.
Head = Cal, because its one of the best schools in the country, has some great opportunities for m field.

I hate the confusion. Sending good vibes to you and everyone else in this same state, hopefully some clarity will come along and the right path will reveal itself.

@Cheebii‌ I already sent the UCLA housing app haha. Jumped the gun on that one. Berkeley’s guaranteed housing app is due on June 7th I think. I might just send my transcripts to both to buy myself some time.

@AnthroFlo‌ sending good vibes to you too! Seriously, with UCLA it’s like the crown jewel of the famed city of angels. But then…Berkeley one of the best, if not the very best, public school in America. Then there’s also the whole quarter versus semester debate and it’s all just a mess.

What a terrible burden we all share!

@nichtszumachen‌ indeed, but what a wonderful burden it is to have.

I can’t decide either. I was admitted for Biz Econ at UCLA, but thinking of doing one of the Math majors + Accounting Minor, or maybe trying to double major there. Berkeley has an incredible Applied Math program and I can double major with Econ in two years, and get some exposure in CS as well.

I live about 25 minutes north of UCLA and know I’d love it, but I think Berkeley gives me better opportunities and maybe a change of scenery. Not sure at all.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell…

In terms of ranking differences, UCLA and Berkeley are not very different. Berkeley is usually a few spots ahead of UCLA, but only a few. USNWR ranks Berkeley at #20 and UCLA at #23.

Berkeley is the #1 ranked public school in the country. UCLA is #2. Suffice it to say that both can be considered to be one of the best schools in the country, even if Berkeley is admittedly better. It just irks me a little when people don’t give UCLA the recognition it deserves. :)

Both are internationally renowned and very prestigious, even if Berkeley is generally considered somewhat better known.

But, UC Berkeley is in Berkeley, California while UCLA is in Los Angeles!

Employment-wise, it doesn’t really matter which school you go to. There aren’t significant earning differences between UCLA and Berkeley grads as far as I know.

It really all depends on your personal preferences. What do you want out of the school you want to transfer to? Prestige? A better school atmosphere? Connections? Fun? In these areas, I think most people would say UCLA and Berkeley are nearly equal.

I recommend touring each campus before deciding, if you can. Personally, I have my favorite, but it might not be yours. Good luck in deciding!

I was literally just talking to my mom about how I thought I’d be able to focus on school better after I got my acceptances but how its actually more distracting because I am so consumed by my lack of direction and then literally a few minutes after that conversation the transfer rep from Cal calls me to congratulate me on my admission and to ask if I have any questions.

What is the universe trying to tell me? SO MANY MIXED SIGNALS!

@CalBruin, can you send in the housing app without sending the SIR first?

Ehh I think I’m investing too much into the stereotype that UCLA is more laid back than Berkeley and that it’s nearly impossible to do well in Berkeley. I want to go to law school afterwards so I have to pick the school that I’ll do best in. I’m just not sure which is a better fit for me. UCLA has been my dream school for awhile and I never imagined that I might get into Cal. I just wonder if I can handle Cal.

@randombookie‌ for UCLA you can! You pay the 30 dollar charge and it’s in. I gave UCLA housing a call one day after I submitted my housing app and they told me that my completed application was in their system.

@CalBruin‌

I like to think that if you got admitted to Berkeley, you can handle Berkeley’s rigorous classes, as long as you study hard. And to be fair, UCLA is probably not any easier than Berkeley, especially since it’s on the quarter system.

@Cayton‌ oh I’m sure UCLA isn’t any easier. I’m coming from UCI so I’m already used to the quarter system. The combination of distance from home plus switching to the semester system is kind of daunting. How is the semester system?

@CalBruin, wow thank you so much for that info! I thought I had to send in my SIR first so I was avoiding submitting a housing app. thanks :)

Well, the semester system is what my community college goes by, and it certainly is more flexible. It’s also slower-paced because the semester is 16-17 weeks as opposed to 10 or 11. Overall, it’s pretty nice and allows for some procrastination.

However, at Berkeley, I’m sure they adjust the difficulty of the classes to make up for that…

@CalBruin
I feel like we are on the same wavelength. I too feel like the idea the Berkeley is some insanely difficult school scares me away, perhaps more than it should, and that UCLA’s reputation of being a bit more laid back with the academics makes me more inclined towards them.

@Cayton, I agree! I’ve seen way too many people talk about UCLA like it is a second class university when compared to Cal, but UCLA is an incredible institution of higher education, it is well recognized, highly ranked, has incredible departments, and should be respected. I guess for some people its either Cal or Ivy League and everywhere else is irrelevant.
