I honestly don’t care who flopsy is or how sardonic he is. An offensive comment is what it is. I’m sorry if you’re too jaded to see it.

Let’s say I were to use a metaphor about, say, “fresh off the boat” vs. “fresh off the shipliner” (perhaps not applicable to this situation). That has undertones of insult, intended or not.

Did I say it wasn’t a lot? No. I said neither is FULL of Asians. Each is about 40% Asian. “Full” implies a lot more than 40%.

What is a better metaphor amongst the countries of the world? The metaphor works simply because it works. You have the “motherland” and the “upstart.”

I really think you’re reading between the lines when there’s nothing but blank space and room to be offended. This sounds to me like a case of finding reason to take offense just because.

Honestly, what metaphor serves the same purpose of being contemporary, dealing with the notion of a breakaway upstart, and putting into light the relative “prestige” of the two organizations? If you look past the “Asianness” of it all, it’s a fitting metaphor because on every other level it just works!

Plus, why is it necessarily offensive to point out the obvious (the large population of Asians)? That’d be like taking offense for making fun of Brandeis for being dead on Passover week. Because, y’know… it’s largely Jewish.

Would you be offended if I said that part of the reason I didn’t go to Brandeis was that I felt like it was spending time at family functions (I’m Jewish)? I mean, it’s well known that Brandeis has a large Jewish population.

Or let’s get more broad. If I said that Duke was like being in West Staines (a WASPy sort of part of London), would you find that offensive?

The point is that I doubt anyone would have been offended if someone had called Berkeley Haight-Ashbury and UCLA West Hollyood, even though there are possible groups to “offend” there.

It’s very selective offense, if you ask me.

umm…honestly, i think you guys just need to chill, lol. even if you did find what flopsy said offensive, i doubt he said it to be rude. honestly, i’m pretty new to CC, and i thought the comment was just an attempt at humor. he even threw in the cute little smiley face to show that he/she (sorry, cant tell the gender by the name =] ) didn’t mean any harm.
