So.. I have given up U of Michigan, my dream school because of financial aid.

UCLA aid: $9517 per year. the rest will be loan.. I'll be graduating with $ 36,760 debt with parents paying up to $11750 a year

UCB aid: $ 10192 per year. the rest will be loan.. I'll be graduating with $ 38,576 debt (more than UCLA for some reason) with parents paying up to $11750 a year

UCD aid: I just got one time scholarship $ 18385 I'm not sure how much aid I'll get for the rest of my college career..

I want to study pre-med and I will most likely transfer after first or second year. I NEED TO GET OUT OF CALIFORNIA. and I hated both UCLA and UCB. I haven't visited UCD but everyone tells me I'll fit right into UCD for some reason. I'm not sure why.

I don't want to go to too competetive college since I want to go to medical school... One major reason I didn't like UCB was because it was SOOO big and so impersonal. Besides people at Berkeley seem so intense. UCLA, because it's too close to my home. Any advice?

If you plan to transfer aafter first or second year, why don’t you consider attending a junior college instead. There are many good junior colleges/community colleges in California. You will be saving a lot of money which will come in handy for Medical School.

Go to UC Davis , but first contact them and ask about FA for the following 3 years…

You already know that you don’t like UCLA and UCB. Do you know why???

Do not consider transferring. Transfer students rarely get good financial aid, and if you want to be pre-med, then you need to minimize undergrad debt. It is VERY DOUBTFUL that you would get any decent aid package as a transfer to an OOS student.

UC Davis is VERY DIFFERENT from southern California…so this “need” to “get out of California” will essentially be doing so by going to Davis. Since Calif is such a big state, simply going to another region of Calif is the “same” as leaving the state.

Please post your question in the Pre-med section. There are people there who know a lot about pre-med and other related issues for you.

Well i don’t want to transfer to UCs. I want to transfer to Private universities and won’t i have higher chance of getting in if I went to UCBerkeley?

@mom2collegekids,

thanks for your advice!
I didn’t like UCB because it was so big and it just felt really impersonal. Besides the competetion and the workload, I’m not so sure I’m up for such tense environment.
UCLA is too close to home.

Whatever you do don’t go to a community college if you are going to med school. My neighbor was an honor student and went to community college for two years before transfering to UCD and then she had to take a year off before she went to med school because everyone that interviewed her said she wasn’t as competitive as those students who didn’t go to a community college. The medical schools don’t respect community college classes. She finally did get in to George Washington Medical school in DC but it is the most expensive medical school!

Wow! thanks for the insight, IBWarrior! I definately won’t be going to a community college…

Yes…don’t go to a CC if you’ll be going to med school.

I think you’ll like Davis. Good for pre-med and less competitive than Berkeley or UCLA.

Again, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to transfer to an OOS school (even a private one) in a couple of years because transfer students don’t usually get good aid. Your family would be expected to pay full price (or close to it).

Do you have any other affordable options? Where else (besides UMich) did you apply to and get accepted? What were the FA packages from the other schools.

Also…be sure to find out what your FA situation will be at Davis for years 2, 3, and 4.

What exactly is that scholarship that you got from them? What is it called? And, are you sure it’s only for one year?

wcmichelle,

While I agree that UCD might be the most tolerable choice, their FA offer is unclear. Frankly, I would not go to any of these UCs if I wanted to go to med school. I would pick a CSU like Humboldt (VERY different from So Calif) and go there due to a less competitive atmosphere and earn really high grades.

Yes, reconsider med school?

If you cannot handle the competition in a UC, you will not be very competitive for med school. (And a Cal State is not a good option for premed; very few acceptances among the unhooked applicants.)

btw: not many, non-competitive private colleges offer much financial aid to transfers. They save it for the matriculating Frosh.
