Hi everyone, I got admitted into UCSD for fall 2012 for math &econ joint major, and i'm waiting to hear from UCLA for math/econ major. I'm a transfer student with perfect GPA and everything.. and I can't decide where I wanna go UCSD or UCLA? What do you guys think? What's a better choice for my major? P.S. after BS I'm planning to go for my masters and maybe PhD in probably math, not so much econ. Thanks for all the answers =)

UCLA’s better; but I advise against choosing by rank/prestige alone. For all I know you’re the sort of person who hates cities like LA and, for whatever reason, adores those like La Jolla. . . .

I am rooting for UCLA in this case.

Depends on what you’re into. I personally think LA is over hyped just because of how well known and prestigious it is. It used to be dream school for those very reasons. I had the opportunity to stay at the campus for an entire week and I realized it wasn’t as great as it was made out to be (in my opinion, at least). Of course it’s an awesome school, but I decided the chill beach atmosphere of La Jolla was more for me and I’m starting at UCSD next fall(didn’t even apply to LA). Best of luck in your decision making process.

@ Integrant! Great comment! im in the same boat too ^^!
@ People reading the forum, dont stress out too much over it! its just undergrad lol

^ Funny, I went and visited UCSD and I didn’t like the campus at ALL but I really, really loved UCLA. So I didn’t apply to UCSD. Everyone is different. Definitely go visit.

If you’re thinking of a PhD then its crucial to get to know some profs. You’ll need good recs for one thing. They are the experts in the reputation of various programs; many times a student picks a program for their PhD where the overall rep of the school isn’t the highest but the department is well known by those in the field (who are the ones who hire the grads, so their opinion matters) as being one of the top.

You should note that getting to know profs is independent of what school you pick. Which is my 2nd tip. It really doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things which school you pick, it matters that you get to know (and impress) some profs, that you do well in your classes. So visit both and pick the one where you think you’d be the happier student.

thanks guys for your suggestions!

@Integrant: Your post sounds more like you’re forcefully convincing yourself that UCSD will be better than UCLA. May I ask exactly why you didn’t apply to UCLA?

Posts regarding which school will be better for you will undoubtedly go back-and-forth when it’s presented like this. In my opinion (since both schools are ridiculously good and people seem to forget just how prestigious all the UCs are), I think you should give your social life a serious evaluation in helping you decide. I don’t think enough people put emphasis on checking whether they fit in with the “flavor” of a campus, and while you’ll undoubtedly meet people of every kind of personality at both universities, the general schemas you develop about the two schools aren’t exactly wrong. Take it into consideration.

Haha! I’m on the same boat, did you apply to Cal too?!
