UCLA or UCSD?

Hi, I am a CCC transfer. I already got admitted to UCSD. I am still waiting for UCLA and Cal obviously. My major is Electrical Engineering.
I think I should be able to get in UCLA. I have a pretty solid GPA (3.8), plus I am a Navy Veteran. Since Cal's EECS is ultra-competitive. I am not sure if I will get in for sure.
So in case if I get rejected by Cal and I have to choose between LA and SD, which one should I choose? (Either one, I have to live there.)

Thank you for any feedback.

My friend is an electrical engineering major at UCLA. He says it’s crazy hard there. But he appears to be having a great time as well. Before he entered the program, he didnt seem so proud of being a Bruin. Now he is proud of being an EE Bruin.

So take it for what it’s worth - UCLA, by a long shot.

dude, I apply to UCSD with EE major too, and my GPA is also 3.8…but the record on TRITON shows my application is still in review…
I apply for UCLA and UCB, still waiting…but I am so anxious for my UCSD admissions decisions…

ucla’s EE is a little bit higher ranked than UCSD, around 15th…berbeley is 3rd, MIT first, stanford is nunber2

^ that’s only true for grad school. undergrad EE ranking for UCSD is a bit higher than UCLA on USNEWS. I believe UCSD is 13th and UCLA is 15th while Cal is ranked 2nd.

greenleaves,
I think you should be fine. I am pretty sure that you will get in to SD…
there will be more coming out soon…

Thank you for the inputs.

I also noticed the ranking issue. They ranked so close to each other. It really doesn’t make much difference.

How about when future Employers look at these two schools? Will there be any differences?

I believe the differences between the rankings are SO close, it really doesn’t make one better over the other. US News deduce their rankings on specific criteria such as student to faculty ratio, and amount of funds for research, etc…so you can look at the breakdown of what LA and SD scored in each category, and YOU decide which is better for your needs.

You need to lay out the pros and the cons for yourself…everyone’s are different obviously, but I can try to point out some:

UCLA is more world renown in general, regardless of the US rankings, so that is always something to consider.

Living environment is important to some people, such as myself, so if you are interested in lifestyles of each, I can give you my opinions if you are not from these areas. I have spent some time at UCSDs campus, and La Jolla and went to transfer admits day last year. I am temporarily living in Westwood right now (UCLA neighborhood).

well, as what I saw on assist.org, UCLA has a separate section for EE, but UCSD’S EE is bonded with CS…In my opinion, UCLA looks more famous than SD because SD is more famous at BOI field.

I prefer LA, but Berkeley is a better option for me. If and only if I got accepted.LOL

My idea is you will have better chance to find a ideal job in LA.

Recruitment would be best at CAL. Recruitment would also be good at UCLA is you are looking to stay in LA.

I guess LA edges SD a little then, since I live in LA as well…

SD is not only famous for bioeng. SD is also famous for EE as well. Most of the major recruiters have strong background in military and telecommunications, such as lockheedmartin, boeing, general atomics, and qualcomm.

And why does it have to do with combined department?
Berkeley has EECS dep.- EE, CE, and CS combined
UCLA has only EE dep.- separated CE and CS department
UCSD has ECE and CSE dep- EE and CE combined in ECE and CS and CE combined in CSE

you choose the major within the department. you don’t learn EE, CS or CE altogether…
