UCLA or UCSD?

Hello all,

I was admitted to both schools, and am now wondering where I should go. Here's the situation - my parents want me to stay close to home so that they save money, but UCLA is gonna be 2k less for me and them than UCSD would (I've tried explaining this numerous times, but they just don't get it!!). UCLA is giving me 1500 more in aid and it will cost less in the long run.

Pros about UCLA:
*My top choice school since beginning of high school
*It's in LA!
*More well-rounded in academics (in engineering and business, as well...since I plan on getting a Bachelor's in engineering and then go on to get a MBA).
*World-renowned fame and recognition
*Better social scene than SD...MUCH better.
*Nicer campus than SD

Cons about UCLA:
*Have to drive 2 hours if I wanna visit my parents or go home
*More competition than LA, I think

Pros about UCSD:
*Close to home, so I can still be there if I wanna
*Good engineering program
*Not as much competition as LA
*Parents get what they want...
*By the beach!

Cons about UCSD:
*No social scene
*Only specialized in engineering and biological sciences...if I wanna switch out of that, then it won't be as great as LA.
*Crappier campus compared to LA.
*Racism...

With all that being said, where do you think I belong and why?

P.S. Give me reasons to NOT live at home if I choose to go to SD...They think it is "worth it".

Thank you!

Cross competition off the list…I doubt you will find the competition at SD to be any less than LA. Engineering will be competitive wherever you go, just like the sciences. With that said, LA has only one minor con! :)

‘SD in your parents’ minds is cheaper because they expect you to live at home. This literally will equate to huge savings to tens of thousands of savings for them.

I’m not going to tell you to go to UCLA if your parents really want you to go to UCSD. It’s their decision as much as yours as long as they’re paying. UCLA has a lot to offer but it’s not worth $60,000+.

@sentimentGX4 - If I stay at home, my parents will pay for my car, parking, insurance, gas, and such. If I go to LA, I will be taking care of housing (student loans). They will pary for me to live there. NOW where do youy think I belong?

This is how I see it. You only have a college experience once in a life time. These are the times you will remember for the rest of your life. IF UCLA is your dream…go there. Even if you have to spend a bit more do it. Regret sucks…so dont look back in a few years and say ahh I wish I did this. Do what ever your heart tells you (even though it sounds super cliche).

Well sometimes parents think beyond themselves… Maybe they would rather buy you a car and pay for the insurance and parking permits rather than let you bury yourself in tens of thousands of dollars in debt? You should be gracious toward their consideration for your well-being.

“Cons about UCSD:
*No social scene
*Only specialized in engineering and biological sciences…if I wanna switch out of that, then it won’t be as great as LA.
*Crappier campus compared to LA.
*Racism…”

Social scene is made by the individual. If you want to go out and party, you can do it.

UCSD has much more to offer than engineering and biological science. Go out a research a bit more.

Most agree that UCLA has a beautiful campus, but UCSD is nice too, just not as great in comparison.

Racism. Really??

If UCLA was your dream school, i suggest you go there. It’s better than going to UCSD with a negative attitude.
