I was admitted to both schools, and am now wondering where I should go. Here's the situation - my parents want me to stay close to home so that they save money, but UCLA is gonna be 2k less for me and them than UCSD would (I've tried explaining this numerous times, but they just don't get it!!). UCLA is giving me 1500 more in aid and it will cost less in the long run.

Pros about UCLA:
*My top choice school since beginning of high school
*It's in LA!
*More well-rounded in academics (in engineering and business, as well...since I plan on getting a Bachelor's in engineering and then go on to get a MBA).
*World-renowned fame and recognition
*Better social scene than SD...MUCH better.
*Nicer campus than SD

Cons about UCLA:
*Have to drive 2 hours if I wanna visit my parents or go home
*More competition than LA, I think

Pros about UCSD:
*Close to home, so I can still be there if I wanna
*Good engineering program
*Not as much competition as LA
*Parents get what they want...
*By the beach!

Cons about UCSD:
*No social scene
*Only specialized in engineering and biological sciences...if I wanna switch out of that, then it won't be as great as LA.
*Crappier campus compared to LA.
*Racism...

With all that being said, where do you think I belong and why?

P.S. Give me reasons to NOT live at home if I choose to go to SD...They think it is "worth it".

brownman777, you are an idiot if you really think UCSD is racist.

Please, a couple dudes decide to throw a party in poor taste (not like it was THAT bad), it gets blown out of proportion, and all of a sudden our school is racist?

Try telling some of the pre-meds at UCSD that it is less competitive than UCLA - they will laugh in your face.

ALSO UCSD is not racist, did you know that the person who hung the noose in the library was BLACK?! People should not feed into the media bull****. It was all staged.

UCLA is definitely better than UCSD, but some of the **** you say about SD is just ridiculous.

No social scene? Get your ass off the couch, go outside, and join a frat or other clubs. There IS a social scene. The only people who complain about the social scene are the ones who are too socially dead themselves to go find things to do.

Crappier campus? Debatable.

Only specialized in engineering and biological sciences? Hilarious.

dude seriously anyone you ask on the SD forum is going to say SD over LA…

campus is totally subjective, i happen to like SD’s infinitely better than LA’s

SD is considered world-renowned in its science and math departments so there’s no saying that it’s sup-par compared to LA

who’s to say that the social scene is any better or worse? we have the same greek system with nationally affiliated sororities and fraternities. if your excuse is that we don’t have DI football, remember that it’s not the sports that make the social scene better or worse, its YOU getting off your butt and making an effort

SD is in every way as good as LA as far as I’m concerned. The only thing that should be changing the game is the amount of financial aid you receive.

yaaa duuude no offense but why are you bagging on SD, in SD’s forum…? if you want to go to LA, go to LA. don’t make your decision based on what your parents want because you won’t want to regret it later on.

I’m a senior too and I chose UCSD over berkeley. and i’d do it again in a heartbeat. so i wouldn’t denigrate SD because obviously it does have an appeal to it that UCLA and Cal do not have.

^Exactly why SD isn’t less competitive than LA. You will find students who turned down higher universities to attend SD, so there is no saying that SD is any less competitive than LA xD

FA can make a huge difference though, so if you really can’t handle those loans…SD is the more practical choice.

UCSD HAS a social scene…but not nearly as good as LA’s

Racism occurs everywhere…UCSD just happened to have a serious incident which garnered national attention

Competition at both places is tough for sure…But I can say that competition across the board will be a bit more difficult at LA than SD

My parents would be paying for my stuff such as car, insurance, parking, money for me, and gas if I stay home…but if I dorm, regardless of the school, Im paying it in student loans.

Seriously… from the looks of it (and you even admitted yourself), you want to go to LA over SD.

To say there is…

1-Racism at UCSD is just stupidity. Just because some people made a poor decision, somehow through association (even though I dont even know who those people are) I’m a racist!?

2-This school isnt as competitive!? Please, a majority of the people here didnt get into UCLA or Cal (their top choices) and are now working harder than they would have at the other schools to get into grad schools and make a name for themselves. Grad schools have even acknowledged that some of their top applicants and most competitive come from UCSD.

3-There’s no social scene!?!?!?!?!? Please, if you lived the night I had tonight with UCSD’s social scene, you would definitely not be saying that. I dont remember anything fomr 6 pm to 1 am, thats how the social scene and frats are here.

And dont give us that stupid “my parents are doing this and that” stuff. My parents wanted me at Cal and even though I got in (and you could argue that that’s a better school than LA) I chose SD without any thought. And like Karebear, I would do it again A MILLION times over

So just do us and yourself a favor and just go to UCLA
