UCLA or UMich?

I've been admitted to UCLA and UMich recently and I decided to major in math in my undergrads. I am contemplating between these two because they are both top universities. In terms of academic performances and atmosphere, which one would you choose regardless of the tuition and fees ? I heard that UCLA is totally a party school, but I don't know if it is true. Besides, concerning the undergrad education, which one has fewer students in classes?

Any school is a party school, if that’s what you want to do. The possible exceptions might include BYU and the military academys. Both UCLA and Michigan are top-rated publics, so it then comes down to cost. If you are a CA resident, go to UCLA and if you are a Michigan resident, go to Michigan.

I’m an international student so the location doesn’t matter. What I need to know are the academic performance, class size and academic atmosphere.
P.S. I’m not that party animal so the fewer parties, the better…

I would go to UCLA, because I like large size & modernized cities. There would be much more opportunities, events, activities and fun just to be in such a place. Michigan is just too obscure under my consideration. But I have to admit, UCLA would be definitely much more ‘party-kind’ compared to UMich. I guess I enjoy social & innovative living styles… No matter where u go, good luck!

UCLA has a better reputation, though you really cant go wrong with either. Congrats!

The UCLA population is so big that you can find your niche and not party if you’re not into it… And i’m not sure which school has fewer students in the classes but you can check online to see the student to teacher ratio. Personally, I would go to UCLA (as it is my dream school, lol) because its near the pacific ocean, in a modernized city, GREAT weather year round, which you will definitely not get in Michigan, because it snows a lot and I also hear the dining hall is great. <–These are just personal things I like about UCLA :)

Both Great Schools with excellent academic reputations. Both Huge.

UCLA has better weather (unless you’re into skiing, in which case, UMich has better weather.)

Academically comparable. No real edge either way. The difference is in location. For example, if you want to be a college student in a real great college town, then go to Michigan. It all depends on what is a good fit for you. I will say that UCLA has a huge Asian population on campus. If you are from Asia, you might want to take that into consideration.

I hope you are not going to make a $200,000 decision based on the opinion of posters on CC.

Vist the two universities to see which one appeals more to you.

Advanced math classes usually run small. Even at the mega-schools.
Ann Arbor is more friendly to average student budgets. Do you really want to compete to get into a club?

There is no academic difference. UCLA has lots of internationals, and in my experience while it has parties these are very easy to avoid. I think UCLA will be a better pick for you, I think you will enjoy LA/ the campus more and its a direct feeder into LA jobs longterm. The only consideration here is campus/ location. The academic difference is a moot point.

If you are a skier, don’t go to Michigan. You will be disappointed.

Pick Michigan, UCLA is a good school but it’s not on the same level as Michigan. It’s more comparable to UNC. Berkeley vs. Michgan would be a better match up.

“UCLA has lots of internationals…”

So does Michigan. UCLA has 4,000 international students, of which 2,000 are undergrads. Michigan has 5,500 international students, of which 1,600 are undergrads.

“I think UCLA will be a better pick for you, I think you will enjoy LA/ the campus more and its a direct feeder into LA jobs longterm.”

You could say the same thing about Michigan with Chicago and NYC. And with the recovery of the automotive industry, even Detroit is going to be an appealing option for college graduates.

“The only consideration here is campus/ location. The academic difference is a moot point.”

I agree with that post entirely, unless the OP’s wish is to study Engineering or Business, in which case, I think Michigan has the upper hand.

Academics are great at both schools. The location is the major difference.

Michigan - Cold

LA -Sunny and major city in the world.

Cold in winter. Very warm in summer and a beautiful Fall football season LA does not have.

While we do have warm weather all year round, it’s a common complaint that we don’t have ‘seasons’ here. i.e., you don’t see the leaves turn all these pretty colors in the fall, and freeze to death in winter, and see things bloom in spring. Just putting that out there if it means anything to you.

@barrons Michigan does have a better football team, but to say UCLA does not have a beautiful fall football season is a lie and just your opinion.

We play at the freakin Rose Bowl!!! There is nothing like tailgating in Pasadena on a beautiful sunny day or warn night. Last year I attend 3 home games (Cal, Colorado, Washington St) all which we won. So yeah, might not be Michigan, but UCLA has its share of fun [UCLA 2011 Homecoming Flashmob.MP4 - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

If you can make it to the game of course. I prefer to see my team play within 25 miles of my campus. Of course Michigan tailgates as good as anyone, however school spirit is much stronger at Michigan IMO.

We also sell out every game. Last year I attended games at home where played against Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Ohio State. All of which we won of course!
