does anyone here know about it? like how hard it is to get in? is it year round, as opposed to the marching band, which is just fall? is it really time consuming?

Are you referring to the Philharmonia or Symphony? They are both year round. Philharmonia rehearses about 6-7 hrs per week. Symphony is more like 4-5.

Symphony (non major) rehearses on wednesdays, 6:30-9 something like that

Philharmonia (major) reherases Tue and Thurs 3-6.

Its possible for a non major to get into philharmonia but its going to be hard.

i'm referring to symphony. how hard is it to get accepted as piano player? i havent practiced it in a couple of years. how about violin? i'm a total beginner at it

There's usually only one opening for piano, so it's pretty difficult to get in.

If you're a "total beginner" at violin, you're not going to make it in.

what about for instruments that I havent played in 3 years or so? how tough are the auditions for those?

for the auditions in general, do they expect you to play those near-perfectly or what?

If you haven't played an instrument in 3 years, you're going to have a very tough time getting in. What instrument are you referring to?

These aren't some mickey mouse orchestras...symphony plays at a professional level, even for non music majors. Go look at the audition repertoire. If you think you can play it (well) then give it a shot.

there's always symphonic band if you just want to perform for fun, a ton of people i know float in and out of it from quarter to quarter but they enjoy it!

i was referring to symphonic band, for non majors the whole time and i intend to perform just for fun.

liyana, is it true that its difficult to get in, considering that i havent played instruments for years?

i'm a music major (violin)and i looked at the excerpts of the nonmajor and major to compare... the nonmajor excerpts require advanced level playing as well... they are all very standard performance repertoire... i think you need to play a few more years to get into the symphony even...

as a nonmajor you can get into philharmonia only if you are "qualified" according to the UCLA music department website

Metalzoa13–why would anyone want you in their orchestra if you don’t know how to play an instrument well? Why would anyone want to listen to you?
