Shawnee - It’s not absolutely essential, but I did pick up some good info along the way. I’ll post the exact schedule later or scan in a PDF.

UCLABound - There are plenty of places.

thanks thinkgolden, that’ll help out a lot^^^

i have to fly over there the same day, so i’ll be a bit late.

Could you also mention whether you will be allowed to enroll in more than 10 units?

The reason I ask is because current UCLA students can only enroll in up to 10 (first pass) and the earliest that students can enroll up to their study list maximum is July 6th.

http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/soc/enrollappt.htm

From the orientation site:

-Students have a first- and second- pass at enrollment. The first pass allows students to enroll in up to 10 units (usually 2 courses). The two passes have separate enrollment dates and times, but the second passes do not begin until all students have had their first pass.
-All continuing students have completed their “first pass” at enrollment before the Summer Orientation sessions begin. But new students do not have a first/second pass. They enroll in all their courses at their Orientation session.

Supa - All new transfers get to enroll in up to 19 units.

Here’s how the day has gone since my last update:

After the presentations in Moore 100, you go outside and meet with your Orientation Group and Orientation counselor (this is different from your Departmental advisor, who’ll you’ll meet with later). When you walk outside, all of the counselors are holding up giant homemade signs with their names on them - it’s quite a sight. You are grouped with other students in your same major.

12:00 pm - This is supposed to be lunch, but like i said earlier we were running behind. We organized into our groups, did introductions and went over our DPR. You’ll also schedule a time later on in the day to have a one on one meeting with your counselor. The time will range from 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm.

12:20 pm - Small campus tour and lunch until 1:30 pm.

1:30 pm - Meet with your Departmental Advisor. This isn’t the same as your counselor. The Departmental Advisor goes over major requirements and answers questions.

2:30 pm - You’re free until you have to meet with your orientation counselor. My appointment is at 4:30 pm, which is why I’m able to post all this right now. During this free time, you can roam around, or attend a workshop. I attended a small workshop on time management and study skills. It was pretty cool, they give you a handout of all the study areas on campus.

*On a side note, it takes 8 minutes to walk from Covell Commons to the Bruin Bear.

I’ll post later with more details, if you have any questions just ask. I probably forgot to mention a few things, but you’ll find out first hand soon enough.

question: should we know beforehand who our orientation counselor is? oh and another thing, what if we’re planning on changing majors? should we go to the group for the major we want? thanksss

I’m sure your Orientation Counselor will send you an email before your session.

Thank you for that update, wow, haha!

Yep, your orientation counselor will send you an email. When she does, you should tell her that you want to change your major. I would also contact the department advisor of the major you want to transfer into ASAP!

5:05 p.m. Orientation counselor is running a bit behind, I’m still waking for my meeting. After this it’s dinner, then at 8:00 p.m. we enroll in our classes!

6:25 p.m. - The food here is amazing! I had to rush out of there before I stuffed myself. They even have an espresso machine. An espresso machine! I put some soft serve in a cup, then I poured a shot right over it. Yum.

mmm. any vegetarian food? i’m starting to get hungry now

I’ve been studying their meals, it all sounds so good that I’m talking to a hypnotist to 'tize me to eat healthier so I can try all of it!

thinkgolden- you are a Psych major right? What classes are you enrolled in & did you have any difficulty getting the classes you want? hmmmmm I’m so nervous… My appt is on July 28. :(

was parking easy to find?

are we allowed to leave our cars there for 2 nights?

parking is for sure easy to find. there are parking lots all over campus for $10 a day…

I was orientation 201 and I was BARELY able to get any of the classes I wanted/needed…so much more for the orientation 206ers and so on, but hey maybe they might open more classes

Yeah. They had a lot of vegetarian choices.

I’m a Philosophy major. I didn’t have any problem getting classes, but I hear Psych courses fill up pretty quick. The schedule of classes is in real time, so I’d keep an eye on it and create several back up plans using the MyUCLA Class Planner.

This has been a fun thread to follow. Thanks for live blogging your orientation. Provocative thread title as well. Good luck on your up coming semester.
