i am transferring to ucla this fall and i was wondering if orientation for international student is mandatory. i will be flying back to my home country this summer, so i would like to arrange my schedule accordingly. if you guys happen to know anything, please leave a feedback and it will be greatly appreciated. thank you!

I believe orientation is mandatory or not depending on your major, not on your visa status.

Only students in the following schools are required to receive academic advising prior to enrolling in classes:

Students in the School of the Arts & Architecture

School of Theater, Film, and Television

School of Engineering and Applied Science

School of Nursing

If you’re in college of arts & science, then you’re not required to attend. But you’re HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to attend since you’ll have a chance to talk to an academic counselor and the most important thing is that enrollment in courses for Fall Quarter takes place during your orientation session. If you don’t go to the orientation, then you have to contact the orientation office and figure out how to enroll yourself. That self-enrollment thing is easy, but the crucial part is that you’ll be the last to register for classes, after everyone has already taken all good spots. You definitely don’t want so!

If you’re planning on flying back to your hometown, then I recommend you to attend the first orientation, which is on June 30th. Then you won’t miss anything and still have plenty of time for summer at home since fall quarter won’t start till Sep 21st.

Is there any orientation date like in late August? I’m in the opposite position to OP. I’m flying back to my country on May 31, and I’m not back until the end of August. :(

doonroy, the latest is August 17. I think you shouldn’t miss the orientation. If you already booked your return flight for around late august, is there any way you can change it to mid august?

You are required to attend the international one, except for exceptional reasons. The other one that happens earlier in the summer is not required but recommended.

They are different orientations with different purposes. The one designed for everyone includes academic info and the international one does not.

Personally I’m attending both, along with the summer sessions to get a head start.

I heard that if you attend the last orientation session, there will be no class available and you end up taking unnecessary GE classes in order to have enough units (for int’l students). Is that true @@… I’m scared, I wanna be at home as long as I can and intended to go to the last session, but now I’m confused :(
