UCLA Orientation Session 201!

@levonid: My orientation is 202 but my DPR hasn’t been updated yet, if that helps.

Just curious, what are all of your plans for after orientation ends? Will you guys drive home? Catch a late flight? Stay over night in a hotel? Something like that.

is anybody going to the 202 session?

I’ll be there Friday for the 202 session. I just uploaded a photo, I hope my Bruin Card is ready!

everyone that attended session 201… how did it go? anything we should prepare for??

They’re probably still on campus; enrollment was 8-9pm last year, so I’m assuming it’s the same this year.

…but I’m curious as well lol

Orientation was exhausting to say the least lol, but in the end it was all worth it because i got the classes i wanted. I’ll give you guys a little outline on what to expect.

7:30- Free Breakfast and Refreshments (Bagels, Doughnuts, Coffee, etc…) This is also when you check in. They give you a bunch of goodies (Backpack, notebook, this book that they tell you to read but you don’t really have to lol and some other basic materials.

8:15- Your orientation counselor will be holding up a sign with their name on it, so that’s when you meet them. You will be in a group with students in your major. From what i saw, each group ranged from 6-8 people.

9:30- Meeting in Moore 100 (This is where you’ll hear presentations from different people talking about how to register for classes, safety, student conduct, etc…)

11:30- Meet back with your orientation group for lunch. They put about 8 dollars on your bruincard. This is also when your OC will give you your degree progress report.

1:00- Go to your departmental meeting. For people who want to switch, this will be the time to go to the meeting of the department you would like to switch to.

2:00- 5:30- You will schedule a 1 on 1 appointment with your orientation counselor during this time frame. The appointment is about 30 minutes. During your free time, you can attend different workshops.

5:30-7:00- Dinner (pretty self explanatory lol) You get your free buffet ticket on the lower level of De Neve Commons.

8:00- Sign up for your classes!

That’s pretty much it haha. Feel free to ask me anything if you have any questions!

It was extremely long, tiring and the heat was horrible. I didnt leave until 10:30 PM. I suggest you all have many alternatives because you may not end up getting the classes you want… especially if your major is impacted. I know a lot of the psych majors were having trouble adding classes because they were filling up quick.
Also, I wish I had taken my laptop with me because I didn’t plan my schedule in advance and there wasn’t many computers available.

When can you pick up your bruincard?

You can pick it up after you check in or go take your picture if you didn’t send one.

is royce quad in front of royce hall?

I am a psycholgy major and understand what I need to take to get my degree, but how do I know what classes to take my first quarter? I know I need to take psych 100A, but is it true that you are required to take classes from certain columns during your first quarter? (Like not being able to take two courses from column B?) Are you allowed to pretty much take whatever you want (as long as it’s open)? (Or are the counselors pretty restrictive?)

Royce Quad is indeed in front of Royce Hall.

The breakdown already given was pretty good - the timeline was spot on. My only additional advice is for you guys to use the ClassPlanner function on myucla in advance, and do your best to have options in regards to classes. I had one guy in my group that just could not get it through his head that he couldn’t take three major electives (two of which were at the same time!) and that he would have to accept getting into only one major elective for the fall.

Be flexible, and plan ahead now with classplanner … your student adviser will thank you for it.

Do you find out who your counselor is at orientation? Because I never got an email or anything :[ Sucks because most of the classes are full…did many of you get the classes you wanted? ALso you said they give you a backpack…so does that mean we don’t have to bring one or what because I was planning to but I don’t wanna carry so much stuff haha thanks!

How was the weather? Hot? Tolerable?

@ybgirl: I didn’t get an email either, so I’m guessing they’ll tell us at orientation.

@UCLAGlobal: Can you clarify what you mean by not being able to take more than one major elective? This might be a stupid question, but what’s considered a major elective?

I got an email from my counselor the day before the first session so i knew in advance. However, it doesn’t matter. When you sign in, they give you a bunch of stuff and that is also when you will receive your name tag. On the tag it lists the name of your counselor, so when it is time to find your counselor, you will see him/her holding up a sign with their name.

They give you a backpack…so you don’t really need to bring one. It depends on your major in terms of if your classes are full. I got into the three classes i wanted and i’m pre-history.

Were classes set aside for you all? I’m looking at the schedule online and a lot are full.

Also, did the counselors let you register for a class or two outside of your major that wasn’t restricted?

No, they didn’t set classes aside for us. You will enroll in about 3 classes for the fall quarter. It depends on how many requirements you need to complete for your major. For example: I need 10 classes to complete the history major so i signed up for 2 major classes and the other one is an elective i’m taking solely for units and interest.

@pinkpoodlepup you HAVE to sign up for psych 100A, another psych class from a list given (psych 127a, 150, 178, 187, etc) and an elective from another department that is open and not restricted. They’ve saved spots in the psych classes for transfers in every section.

Hey everyone!

Question! My gf is a psych major, and got orientation session 203. What if psych 100A is full? If it’s still open, is she FORCED to take it this quarter? Also, does anyone know how double majoring works? (she wants to double in Psych and Comm. Studies) Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
