UCLA parking permits

given what's been said about students that are dorming on campus usually never get parking permits regardless of their year, is it even worth the trouble applying?

It’s very unlikely that you’ll get a permit unless you have a job that’s located somewhere relatively far away (i.e. you can’t get there by public transportation). But it doesn’t hurt to apply. And best you do it now because all the good parking structure spots are being taken.

I work for UCLA’s transportation department and sought the advice of our student parking coordinator in writing this post. Note: I’m speaking for myself and only myself; this is not an official statement from our department! Hopefully, you’ll find the info here to be useful.

For starters, note that the deadline for Fall Quarter 2010 parking is July 23rd. (Generally, you can find up-to-date deadline information here: [2010-2011 Student Parking Deadlines (1001305)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1001305)

Parking for students is allocated on a point system, not a first-come, first-serve basis. To study the point system, start here: [Student Parking Point System (1003329)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1003329)

Students who fall in a wide range of categories can get “priority” points: athletics, Daily Bruin, student government, alumni/Regent scholar, having children or dependents. Refer again to the web page on the point system to see where you might be eligible for points.

Most residential students who qualify for permits do so because they hold off-campus jobs that require them to work at least three days during the work week (Monday-Friday). They typically get denied the first time around and need to file an appeal, which they can download from UCLA Transportation’s website ([UCLA - Transportation & Parking](http://www.transportation.ucla.edu)) and mail or drop off to the office. (Personally, I encourage you to drop it off. Otherwise, use a reliable mailing service to send the appeal form.) The deadline for Fall Quarter 2010 appeals is September 1st.

If you are a residential student, you will need to pick up the permit in person. You’ll need to show your student ID and your drivers’ license. Also, if you got the permit because of a job, you’ll have to show two recent pay stubs.

Please note, whether they live on or off-campus, student permit holders may get audited. This is because we don’t ask you to submit documents to verify facts like your residential address in the initial application (or subsequent appeal). Please please please don’t cite unverifiable information on your applications. It’s no fun to confiscate a permit.

So in summary, if you’re a student living on campus, it is probably worth applying for parking IF you have some source of priority points (ie Regents Scholar) or if you have a job off-campus.

If you have any additional questions, you can email parking@ts.ucla.edu or you can post here and I’ll do my best to answer!

sirinya:

My Fall parking application (www.transportation.ucla.edu/secure/StudentParking/Applications/ ) says:

“Carpool Parking Application on File”

But I’m not planning on carpooling?

@sirinya

i have the same problem as the above poster; however, i originally did apply for carpool w/ another student, but we’re both going to be living on campus so that means were ineligible even though i have an outside job. it wont let me change my “carpool application” to an individual parking application when i try to edit my parking application, do you know how i would resolve this?

the parking police are jerks

gave me $100 of tickets in ONE NIGHT

@sirinya:

Do they take into account whether or not you have a disability…?

(I researched these answers by speaking with our student parking coordinator, but am - per usual - speaking for myself. Phew!)

@dezziner: If you’ve got a disability and need parking, you need to apply separately through the Office for Student Disabilities. Here’s the link: [How to apply for Parking through the OSD (HTML)](http://www.osd.ucla.edu/docs/Guidelines/ParkingHOWTO.htm). Parking apps for Fall 2010 will be available September 1 if and only if you’re eligible for disabled parking through OSD. The website says that information regarding parking for fall quarter will be posted within a week or so.

In general, if you have a handicap placard, it appears you need to come into the office to show a receipt verifying this. If you don’t, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with Ed McCloskey (emcclosk at saonet.ucla.edu–by the way, he’s a great guy - he’s helped me out with a separate issue).

@bagelsbagels - I am very sorry to hear that you got a parking ticket. Actually, that you got two in one night. That can be VERY frustrating. If you think you were ticketed incorrectly, you can contest it online at http://www.pticket.ucla.edu. (And it happens. The parking enforcement people are not infallible. Hangtags fall down, etc.) If you want to come talk to our Citation Review and Adjudication people, their window is open 12-5PM during the week. They are very nice, unless people come in all hostile and then things don’t always end well.

@rpicton – that is an error message and it sounds like an IT problem. The student parking coordinator asked me to ask you to email a copy of that error message to parking at ts.ucla.edu. Include your student ID number so that the student parking coordinator can give you an update on your parking application status too.

@andrizzle – You’re right, on-campus students aren’t allowed to carpool. You, however, may be eligible for a permit since you might have enough points to qualify for one via your off-campus job. You’ll need to cancel your application and re-apply. Luckily, you still have enough time to do so (remember the deadline is July 23). Please e-mail parking at ts.ucla.edu with your name and ID number and the student parking coordinator will e-mail you back give you the go-ahead to reapply.

Hope this helps!

thanks so much! and i have another question if you don’t mind.

i have direct deposit (pay check goes directly to my bank account), which means the check stubs i receive are voids with $0.00 as the amount. so if i get audited, how will i prove to them i’m working at least 3 days a week if it doesn’t say?

@Andrizzle–

In the event you get audited, what you might consider doing is showing your bank deposit statements. Highlight the row that shows you got paid by your company. Also, make a photocopy of your pay stub (which you said shows zero) so that the department understands why you had to show your bank deposit statements.

Feel free to e-mail parking offline at parking at ts.ucla.edu if you want/need quicker/more private responses.

If I state that I am employed off campus, will they contact my employer before validating my permit or during an audit? And if I lose my job during the school year, after I receive my permit, do I have to report it? If I forget to report it and I am audited, is it grounds for them to take away my permit?
