I know I cant get parking on campus, but what about off campus?

Anything pay by the day or month or something?

I really need to have a car while I attend UCLA.

There is free street parking, but as you can imagine, it is pretty much luck of the draw whether you will find a spot or not. Some people get parking with their apartments and are willing to sell their spots (usually for a bigger price than on-campus parking) - check the MyUCLA forums for this.

Why do you "need" a car?

theres some lots in westwood that allow monthly parking, but not sure on the details.

Icarus: I am part of many orgranizations around LA and Orange County. Specifically an Arts Association which requires frequent travel around LA.

I would like to continue my involvement, thus I need a car. Public transportation would be a big problem.
A car is critical in LA. Im not planning on staying on-campus for four years.

So about those lots in Westwood.. anyone have any more information regarding them? Maybe a figure?

Some people will rent out their apartment spots for the highest bidder. I've seen them listed for anything from $50-200/month. I'd anticipate that the lots are somewhere around there.

If you learn how to work the point system, you should get parking. If not first year, then later. Specifically a job far enough away (Orange county or the far reaches of LA county) will probably get enough points for a pass, but they require proof of current employment. I'm not sure if they consider organizations or ECs a basis for points but its worth looking into.

You might be able to score enough points with your situation to score on campus parking. If not, I recommend looking for a spot being rented out by someone in the apartments, which should run you some $300-400 a quarter, but is a bit closer and more convienient than a lot in Westwood. But I don't know if you will be able to squeeze all of that into your schedule. Good luck.

They do not consider organizations or ECs for the point system.

Click on the "need-based points system" in the second paragraph. If you're really desperate for parking, you could look up the carpooling policy, since they're guaranteed a permit. If you can somehow get your organization to list you as an employee and provide documentation, you could try that route, but they do random audits so make sure you can verify everything, because one of the several penalties is a visit with the Dean.

Can anyone advise me as to the closest available free parking options?

I don't care if spaces are hard to get, I'm looking to just leave my car out on the street somewhere for somewhat long periods of time (weeks, probably not more than a month at a time) without it getting towed. Maybe something that can be reached by public transportation from the UCLA campus...

closest street with free parking is gayley. i think you have to move it once a week because they do street cleaning.

^ yep thats the problem - all the streets in Westwood have no parking one day of the week (either Thursday or Friday) for street cleaning. So wherever you park, you're going to be moving your car at least once a week.

overall would it be cheaper to rent a space from third party or try to get a space from UCLA?

TonyLovesRHCP: you should probably check with the city of LA too because I think all city streets have a 72 hr limit on parking without moving your car.

It'll probably be cheaper overall to get a space from the school because it works out to less than $100 a month (I can't remember what I paid) and I suspect that it'd be pretty hard to find a spot privately for less than that. May be wrong though, I've (rarely) seen spaces listed for about $75 a month.

A good place to look is the My.Ucla forums. In the Misc Marketplace forum there are always people looking to rent/rent out spaces.

allie, could you provide a link to the misc forums, I can't find it. thanks.
