UCLA Philosophy Majors

Hi,

I am a newly admitted UCLA student & am contemplating on switching my major from Anthropology to Philosophy but wanted to receive some invaluable feedback, advice, and good information on the program and the overall Philosophy courses at UCLA. I'm aiming for a career in dentistry and am aware that I will need to take the sciences/mathematics courses in the mix with my philosophy courses. Could any current UCLA majors provide me with good information on this fascinating major? Are there any UCLA philosophy major students who are pursuing a career in medicine or dentistry? If so, I'd immensely appreciate any guidance & support

Thank you kindly in advance

Since this is a thread on UCLA philosophy, I’d also like to ask about the prospects of double majoring in this field. I’m a political science major who got accepted and I want to double major with philosophy. In addition to the polisci major prereqs, I’ve also completed the prereqs for philosophy. Will that improve my chances?

@mrD390: as far as I’ve been told, avoid taking taking classes with David Kaplan. While certainly an experience, the difficulty of his classes are renown.

for the most part, philosophy majors do not go into medicine. Though it is possible to go to med school with a degree in philo it is not common nor reccomended.

rather, most philo majors either purse a graduate degree or attend law school

^ i second this! i am a newly admitted ucla philosophy major and plan to go to law school immediately after i recieve my BA.

@mrd390 is your major currently bio anthro or cultural anthro? bio anthro would be a better jumping off point for a career in the medical field than both cultural anthro or philosophy. however if you are set on philosophy, an ethics/value theory focus would definitely prove useful for a future doctor or dentist.

i can’t tell you anything about any health science fields, but i can tell you that UCLA is one of the most historically prestigious philosophy programs in the world. Many top-tier philosophy majors either teach here: Barbara Herman (student of john rawns) David Kaplan (student of carnap, who was the protige of Frege) as well as tyler burge, Donald Martin, Terrance Parsons, etc.

and if they don’t go here, they’ve received their PHDs here or taught here like: Kit Fine, Hilary Putnam, Bertrand Russel, etc.

their philosophy department even has its own wikipedia page:

the professors are also very amazing, and of the highest quality. You can PM me if you have any specific questions about the major.
