UCLA Philosophy transfers, are we screwed?

Now that the Fall 2010 courses are up on URSA, I've been trying to plan a tentative schedule. In the UCLA Philosophy transfer handbook (<a href="http://www.philosophy.ucla.edu/images/stories/transfer_handbook_f09.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.philosophy.ucla.edu/images/stories/transfer_handbook_f09.pdf</a>), they recommend taking the following courses for our first quarter:

SUGGESTED FALL TRANSFER SCHEDULE
- Philosophy 100A
- Philosophy 31 (Logic)
- Logic is rarely approved by petition even if taken at another institution
- Additional upper division course, non-Philosophy for College upper division requirement

Here's the problem.
PHILOS 31 is being offered MW 8:00 AM - 9:50 AM
PHILOS 100A is being offered MW 9:00 AM - 10:50 AM

How are we supposed to take both? They're only offering one section of each course.

I emailed philcounselor@humnet.ucla.edu to let them know. If any other Philosophy transfers share the same concerns I have, you may want to send them an email. Maybe they’ll add another section.

whaaat! I’m taking Deductive Logic right now at De Anza College because ASSIST listed it as transferable. Have you looked into taking summer session at UCLA? Phil 100A is offered for summer session A, and Phil 31 is offered for summer session C!

[Schedule of Classes Course Selection](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/crsredir.aspx?termsel=101&subareasel=PHILOS)

I really hope all my prereqs are transferable. Paying extra money for a class you’ve already taken sucks.

I thought about it, but I wanted to take Philos 137 (Logic, second course) immediately after Philos 31 so that the material would still be fresh in my head. But it doesn’t look like Philos 137 is being offered in Fall.

I know, it sucks. I already took Symbolic Logic at Valley College. I’m assuming UCLA teaches it way more in depth, so taking it at a CC wouldn’t give us the foundation that we need to take other classes - particularly in the advanced Logic courses and Philosophy of Language courses.

Deductive Logic should be transferrable, but it’s not the same as Symbolic Logic. You would have had to take the class anyway.

The UCs sometimes screw up with when they offer classes. For example, at UCSB, they offered O-Chem at 8:00AM and they offered Bio at 8:00AM, so most people couldn’t take both (there were two O-Chem classes, but the first one filled up in like two seconds).

Many people just complained to their respective departments and in about a week or so, the time for one of the classes was change. So, my advice: contact the Philosophy department at UCLA and let them know. Show them the suggested Fall Schedule for Philosophy transfers, and they very well might just change the time. It isn’t as impossible as you might think. And don’t just send an e-mail, call them, and if possible, visit them. They are much more likely to be responsive.

If you take a symbolic logic course at a different college you should be able to get credit for it. A lot of people take a “logic and critical thinking” class or something and think it will transfer when it’s a completely different course than symbolic logic. If you took a symbolic logic course and they refused to accept it I would petition the hell out of that because the whole point of the cc-uc transfer is that equivalent courses are offered at the cc.

its still being offered at the same time.

which one should i take (transfer junior): philo 100 a or logic?

Take 100A. The core classes are offered in sequence, and though it’s not required, it’s recommended that you take them in order.
