Chance me please.
CCC Student
UC GPA 3.33
TAP Certified
Completed IGETC
finished 5 philosophy classes B A A A B= major GPA 3.6
a couple of clubs

Probably in.
I’m assuming those philosophy classes are prereqs?

Yeah, I’d say you’re in; Philosophy is not impacted at all.

50/50 imo. i got into UCLA phil, but average applicant admit gpa was like 3.5 and i assume because of budget cuts admissions are going to get more competitive. Also, philosophy admit rates are decreasing. Admit rates went from 70% in 2010 to 60%, i imagine they’ll be getting smaller.

make sure you have a real good essay.

tough call. average gpa was 3.5 last year? 50/50 cuz ur tap certified. Good luck. I really didnt like philosophy here at UCLA so I switched to History

Thanks for your replies.

Levonid-do you go to UCLA?

beyphy- what was your GPA and were you TAP?

Eshug- whats wrong with philosopy at UCLA

^^ all questions i would like answered as well…

what about me? im philo as well, tap certified, all prereqs done and a 3.45 gpa

I don’t go to UCLA, no. I wasn’t able to get TAP certified last year due to some last-minute technicality, so I decided to stay an extra semester at CC to finish it up; no money to move out and FAFSA failed me. I’m just another one of you Fall11 applicants, haha. However, nearly all of my friends/people I know in Scholars were admitted.

3.1-3.3 GPAs Philosophy/some other non-impacted majors.
The 3.1 GPA dude even got into Berkeley for Philosophy lol.

Sure it gets competitive, but hey; you’ve got priority to a non-impacted major. I would say you’ve got a hell of a chance. I would not be surprised at all if you were accepted, and I would be damned surprised if you got rejected (unless Philosophy REALLY gets competitive).

I’m also assuming you’ve finished all your prereqs and have received A’s/B’s in them.
Do you have an alternate?

@ Eshug: How’ve you been, man!

@ OP: You’re in imo. TAP certified is gold and will put you over the line.

If you don’t do TAP but have a decent GPA around 3.4-3.6 is it always a good possibility or maybe a 50/50 that you’re in for Philosophy at UCLA?

I don’t think I saw anyone over a 3.3 get rejected last year…well that had all pre-reqs completed.

@ Levonid

“I’m also assuming you’ve finished all your prereqs and have received A’s/B’s in them.”

you are assuming that panda48 finished his pre reqs by the spring he transfers? and not finished pre reqs before he applies to UCs right (so by summer since you apply to UCs in Fall)?

@asd:
By the Spring before he transfers.

There was only one pre req that my school had for phil. But my honors counselor told me just to take as many phil classes as i can and I ended up with 5.
@leonvid-lol i just put philosophy on my app no alternate

my gpa was lower than 3.5, (at the time it might have been around 3.42) but the following semester i got it up to 3.46 and had 3/4 of my major prereqs done, and a good essay on why i was picking the major.

However, this was before major budget cuts to the university. They’re being asked to cut $100 mill of the $500 mill cut from the UC budget. However, there’s nothing wrong with taking additional phil classes, but if you’re prereqs aren’t fulfilled you might not be in as good of a position as someone who has more fulfilled with a similar GPA.

also, berkeley phil. isn’t ranked higher than UCLA phil, they’re ranked equally on PG.

but how do you know how many phil pre reqs to take? what do you mean by all pre reqs of philosophy?

and if u don’t take ALL the pre reqs then you can get rejected right before transferring even after you get accepted? i am kind of confused.

asd, see assist.org to find out your major’s pre-reqs for each college you are interested in.

To answer you second question, after you apply you must fill out a UC update, in which, you give the UC system your grades for the fall semester and your planned classes for winter and spring. Pre-reqs/IGETC should be completed by spring not summer for fall admission.

After you submit the UC update (in January) it is expected that you will complete all of these classes with a C or higher. If, for some reason, this does not happen then you must contact the UC’s ASAP. Not completing all the classes you list on your UC update can hurt your chances for admission

so basically you are saying, even after getting accepted, if you do not finish all pre-reqs or other classes u listed on ur UC update can get you rescinded?

Yes, your admission could get rescinded. That does not mean it will 100% be rescinded but there is a possibility. Not finishing a pre-req or IGETC for a very good reason (such as all the classes being full and unable to add or an emergency) is not as big of a deal.

In fact, all admission decisions are conditional because they need to verify all the info you have provided them throughout the application process is, in fact, true. Let’s say that you put on the application that you had a 3.65 GPA but when they check your official transcripts you have a 3.55 GPA; this would obviously be grounds for your admission being rescinded as well.

Bottom line, be truthful and only put classes on your UC update that you are actually taking and planning to succeed in. If, however, you are waitlisted, or crashing a class, you can still put this on the UC update but you should also be sure to note that you are not officially enrolled in the additional comments section.

“Not finishing a pre-req or IGETC for a very good reason (such as all the classes being full and unable to add or an emergency) is not as big of a deal.”

so not finish a pre-req or IGETC is a good reason? or not a big deal?

also, what was all the saying in other threads that u have a higher possibility of getting into UCs if u finish ur pre-reqs? it is not a higher possibility, according to what u r saying. it just keeps u protected from getting rescinded, isn’t that right?

lastly, if i want to do philosophy, should i try to just do as many classes that are offered at my UCs? i mean are technically no mandatory ones, so even if i just finish one of the pre-reqs available and my admission (say i was accepted) would not be in jeopardy?

asd, I think you really need to do some research online and sit down with a counselor. Don’t get me worng, i think it is great that you are interested in all of this information but I don’t think you are understanding it at all.

I’ll try to explain this one more time…

Finishing IGETC and pre-reqs should NOT been seen as optional!
2.Most students who apply have IGETC completed. If you do not complete IGETC you will be at a disadvatage.
3.Most students who apply have their pre-reqs completed. If you do not complete your pre-reqs you will be at a disadvantage.

After you apply you will fill out a UC update where you will provide grades for fall as well as “planned” courses for winter and spring.

You MUST complete all of those “planned” classes with a grade of C or better and in some cases may be required to earn a B or better.
